The RailStaff Awards 2024

Nominations for Station Staff Award

Annie Ludlow

Said the following about Susan Temple:

“Johnstone Station is so much more than a transport hub. It is something more important than that, and far more human.

I'm just a customer: someone with a disability who is grateful when the station building is opened early so I can sit inside on the dark cold mornings on the way to work in London. A reader who loves the exchange of books that bring the community together. A mother - and a mother of son who is obsessed with trains. For him to be allowed to see the other side of the ticket selling desk was better than going to Disneyland. This is not an exaggeration. I'm also the mother of a pre-teenage girl who is beginning to gain her independence. Knowing the staff know who she is and are keeping an eye out for her is helping her find her freedom.

At the heart of all of this is Susan Temple: always trying to do more for customers, to make the station the centre of the community. Johnstone is a post-industrial town. It's not the kind of place you hear about being listed as 'the most fashionable places to live 2023'. It's a place people have lived for generations, and others have discovered as they branch out of the city to start a family. Susan is there for all of these people: she's friendly and gets to know everyone. There is no 'in crowd' - all are welcome and all are welcomed.

Things aren't perfect: there have been times when Susan has been injured as part of her work. Significantly this hasn't changed her attitude or her commitment, as much as it has upset the rest of us.

Susan is an example of how one person can make a difference in a town - just by excelling in their job and really really caring. I think she is perfect for this award.“

Steve Cartwright

Said the following about Susan Temple:

“One of the most friendly and helpful Rail employees.

Susan really brings a great and positive start to my day with her friendly and caring attitude.

Every morning I travel by train to my work. Susan always greets me with a 'good morning' and always advises me about any disruptions that might affect my journey.

Standing waiting for the train I've noticed she treats everyone she serves the same.

A real positive start to the day and a real pleasure to see her and be served by her.“
