Nominations for Rail Engineer of the Year

Said the following about Steve Butt:

“Steve joined Bridgeway in 2013 as an experienced Land and Engineering Surveyor with many years of survey experience already behind him. By this point he had already undertaken a wide variety of survey tasks including topographical, measured building, volumetric and setting out services. Yet at his point of joining, Steve had very limited experience to the rail environment.

Initially Steve was appointed as an Engineering Surveyor within the Geomatics Team and quickly began to use his extensive technical background to lead site teams and mentor less experienced staff in best survey practise. Steve has always been very keen to share his experience with colleagues and management alike, and has been instrumental in developing new systems for improving workflow and maintaining the highest possible standards in survey data delivery. One of Steve’s key qualities is his enthusiasm to embrace emerging technologies and to constantly review working practices to look for ways of improvement – something that he often undertakes out of hours. This quality has been further used as Steve took the lead in developing our use of the Amberg GRP5000 track measurement system.

From a standing start, Steve has also embraced railway safety critical competencies, and quickly gained IWA, COSS and SWL competencies enabling to lead a site from both a safety and a technical viewpoint.

In recognition of his achievements, Steve has been promoted through Project Delivery Surveyor and was again promoted to the position of Senior Surveyor earlier this year. In his new role he continues to tutor new members of staff while taking responsibility for many technical aspects of the survey process. Additionally he has just completed his application and membership interview for the Institute for Civil Engineering Surveyors, which involved managing his own contracts from establishing specifications and tender, through to Quality Assurance and final issue.

On a personal level, I am extremely happy to nominate Steve for Rail Engineer of the Year 2015 as he has shown real commitment and has grown both as a person and as a key member of our team since his arrival at Bridgeway. I am absolutely confident that he will go on to add further and more varied experience to his portfolio and will become ever more integral to maintaining our position as a provider of high quality services throughout the rail sector.“
