Said the following about Merseyrail Liverpool Half Marathon Team:

“Craig Murphy a Leader Driver at our Depot in Birkenhead started with a suggestion to run the Liverpool Half Marathon in March 2023, in a brief conversation with another driver at Birkenhead Central. That colleague agreed and the idea started to snowball. After a conversation with Craig's wife, Olivia they came up with an idea to involve more people in running the Liverpool Half Marathon. Craig then approached his friend Frank who had been diagnosed with Parkinsons and his wife and asked if it was okay if he and a couple of others ran for Parkinson's UK in his name, to which they agreed.

Sixteen others then agreed to join in.

There was a buzz in the mess room that brought a togetherness and resulted in many BC team members getting involved in supporting a great cause. The team comprised of members who were at various levels of fitness. A WhatsApp group was created and this included posting weekly motivational posts. The organisers arranged banners, arranged the venue for afterwards, welcomed staff and family members to the venue afterwards, arranged shirts for participants and communicated throughout.

As a result of the above there has been a noticeable shift in morale across the depot which is brilliant to see, many team members have continued with their running which is great from a health and wellbeing point of view.

It is so warm for all at the depot to know that Craig, Olivia and the Team did this without being prompted and all with the aid of a colleague. This was a great example of going above and beyond for a colleague.

This brought the whole of the depot together for a great cause inclusive of traincrew and managers. People were encouraged to get involved regardless of their fitness levels and the support given by Olivia and Craig was truly remarkable. Knowing that you work alongside people like this team who are willing to go above and beyond in supporting a friend or colleague either through supporting a charity that has supported you or supporting you in achieving a lifetime goal such as running 13.1 miles it humbling to know.

The day was emotional from start to finish, a day which will be remembered for a long time! They raised just under £9,000 for their friend and colleague.“
