Nominations for Rail Engineer of the Year

Mark Lindahl

Said the following about Mark Smith:

“Mark joined Bridgeway in October 2012 as a Geotechnical Engineer after a period back working in Highways on the M1 Junction 25-28 Widening Scheme. He was previously employed by Ramboll and post some site works with BCL Crews where Mark was the client decided he liked the look of what we did and would like to become part of the team.

Mark's work ethos is second to none, it is often said that you have to get up early in the morning to beat Mark in. Mark is always 1st/2nd in the office and kicks off at the only speed he knows to work at - 'quick' earning him the nickname of the 'machine'

Mark has taken over the reporting process for the department and under his watchful eye the reports sent out are widely regarded as excellent quality be they factual or interpretive. Mark's attention to detail is excellent and it is difficult sometimes to find fault with anything he has produced or checked.

Mark has an excellent ability to mentor and develop junior engineers. January is traditionally a quiet month for us and this year while slightly busier was near the same. mark made the most of this time and set all the junior engineers theoretical geotechnical problems and then with a point in the right direction and a worked example set them going. once complete, right or wrong, Mark went through them with the individual and then as a group to ensure complete understanding and the knowledge was shared throughout the group.

In addition to the duties previously mentioned Mark also acts in a PM role here too. He has taken on in the past 12 months Colchester to Clacton upgrade, 2No Access for All (AfA) schemes, multiple small sites for the NR4 Framework Agreement and overseen the testing requirements for two frameworks, as stated he is well deserving of the nickname machine.

Mark is thoroughly deserving of the award for Rail Engineer of the year and is what any young engineer entering the industry should aspire to be.“
