Stuart Weeks

Said the following about Jerry Sims:

“Jerry joined the railway on the 24th of July 1978 at 18 years old and through various TUPE transfers has achieved more than 45 years of continuous service.

His early railway career saw him working as a Labourer as part of the Zonal Station Gang for British Rail based in the Works Section of Ashton Gate Depot in Bristol. In 1990 he attended one of the very last bridge examiners courses to be held at the BR training school at the Grove in Watford.

Following the breakup of British Rail, Jerry transferred with the Western Route Structures Examination Contract a total of 4 times spending time at Amey, Owen Williams, back to Amey and now more recently to Xeiad.

During his time as a structure examiner, it is estimated that he has completed well over 15,000 individual structures examinations, including attending and managing a reopening of the line on a significant number of occasions following bridge strikes (lorries driving into low headroom bridges or bridge parapets), and other structural failures.

He also has and continues to undertake the role of mentoring new trainee examiners who are just commencing their railway careers.“

Simon Gregory
