The RailStaff Awards 2024

Nominations for Apprentice of the Year

Olivia Huntly

Said the following about James Robinson:

“James is a perfect example of someone who has come from a different background and taken advantage of the higher apprenticeship route to become an engineer. He started out in graphic design and brings that creativity to his current role as an asset engineer. He is part way through a Level 7 apprenticeship in Systems Engineering. An unconventional route will hopefully inspire others that they too can become engineers, no matter their background or education.

He's also carrying on in the family business, both his brother and his dad work for Network Rail.“

Patsy Brady

Said the following about James Robinson:

“James will proudly tell you he "came from the tools" and is more comfortable with a spanner than a spreadsheet. However, this has not stopped him from pushing himself to understand the business from a different perspective which includes his pursuit of further education through a Level 7 Apprenticeship in Systems Engineering. I truly value James' experience in the team and his ability to advocate for our front-line teams in our decision making. He also makes me better as I can learn from his experiences and use his alternative viewpoint to improve my outputs.

Additionally, James continues to use his past competencies to support the organisation for example responding to service impacting events such as dewirements.“
