Said the following about Jack Pritchard:

“Jack is an advocate for encouraging, developing and investing in next generation of design engineers; having successfully mentored and managed several placement students, six in total this year so far, as well as supporting the immediate design team.

Jack joined AtkinsRéalis (formerly SNC-Lavalin) as a technician, as part of the Technician Scheme, back in 2013. Fast forward 10 years and Jack is now a Senior Design Engineer, having developed his technical engineering knowledge and experience over this time, now being a valued and well-respected member of the rolling stock design team. Jack is currently leading on interiors to produce design solutions for the successful fitment of ETCS to Tornado and Deltic Heritage vehicles. From Jack’s own experience, he appreciates and understands the importance of having mentors and role models around you when developing your engineering design skills. Jack is now that person, who has responsibility for the overall management and scheduling of all work placement students.

Jack is very diligent, in terms of liaising with external parties, such as companies and/or colleges/schools to understand their expectations of such placements. Jack ensures that the infrastructure is in place for every placement student working with various internal stakeholders, importantly ensuring that the correct safety protocols are in place. For example, earlier this year, with little guidance from head of design, Jack ensured that key individuals were DBS checked for a couple of work experience students.

When it comes to the actual placements, Jack has a full and varied timetable, allowing the students to get a diverse understanding of both producing design for modifications to rolling stock as well as the strategic operation of an engineering consultancy. Jack has patience in abundance and dedicates the time where necessary to support all individuals. This year Jack has led and managed two external Graduates from one of our clients, two Undergraduate summer placements, two work experience students with another external placement Graduate from a client planned early next year. Jack is supported by one other engineer, the reason for this is continue the investment in Jack and his career development within the area of managing others and importance of delegation.

The feedback from all placements have been positive, both from the individuals and from their respective companies/colleges etc. Taking on this active role of nurturing talent, has led to many benefits. Jack is showing what fun and creativity that can be had within engineering design, encouraging young talent from a diverse range of backgrounds to consider a career in engineering. This has resulted in one of the summer placements having received a verbal offer to join the design team in 2024. In terms of external placements from clients, Jack has demonstrated the professionalism of our business as well as the depth of our engineering knowledge and experience that we have shared with their developing talent; thereby strengthening our and collaborative working relationship. All these benefits are all a reflection of Jack’s dedication, patience, time and investment in developing the next Jack into engineering!“

Said the following about Jack Pritchard:

“Jack was our mentor during a graduate placement with AtkinsRéalis as part of the Angel Trains Engineering Professional Development Scheme. Throughout the entire placement, Jack’s enthusiasm for helping to develop young engineers was evident and he provided a constant source of support and a reliable point of contact. He helped us to settle in during our extended placement with them by making us feel included as part of the team. At the start of the placement he introduced us to the function of AtkinsRéalis in the industry and how they interact with key stakeholders. He also introduced us to the wider AtkinsRéalis teams, helping us to grow our network and ensuring that we had as much internal support to assist us with progressing our projects. We have also benefitted from these introductions when interacting with AtkinsRéalis since we have returned to Angel Trains. Our placement consisted of a period of CAD training before moving on to a project design phase. During the training period he was willing to take as much time as required to assist us with developing our CAD skills. During the project phase, he patiently offered his expertise on a wide range of topics including project management, design considerations, customer interactions and best practice in general engineering aspects. He regularly checked in on us to continuously review our progress against our desired placement objectives, and implemented any alterations to best suit our training needs. He also actively ensured that we were able to take part in activities that addressed our initial professional development IMechE competencies. He was also very diligent in actioning safety protocols, checking in on our general wellbeing and accommodating any arrangements we required, which was greatly appreciated by ourselves. We are very grateful to Jack for the positive impact he has had on our careers.“
