The RailStaff Awards 2024

Megan Rutter

Said the following about Bob Barker:

“I am nominating Bob Barker for his outstanding dedication to the Network Rail apprenticeship scheme and his apprentices.

Bob is, without a doubt, the most selfless and kind hearted person, who does not get enough recognition for his tireless work. He always goes out of his way to make sure everyone feels as though they are included and welcome within his classroom. He is fair in his approach and will go above and beyond his daily duties to help anyone achieve their best. He supports his apprentices whenever they might need it, being an ear to listen to frustrations, a cheerleader when they need or sometimes just to give a well needed reality check! Nothing is ever too much for him. He is a well-known, well respected, well liked, integral part of the apprenticeship scheme. He is a credit to his team, the apprenticeship and to Network Rail.

His knowledge is endless and his craftmanship is incredible, but his unwavering support, teaching and guidance throughout the many years he has dedicated to the Network Rail apprenticeship and every one of the apprentices that walked through his classroom door, is what truly makes him deserving of this award.

On a personal note, I credit Bob (quite a lot) for where I am in my career today. He told me I could, so I did.“

Jake Love

Said the following about Bob Barker:

“Bob has been a wealth of knowledge and supports everyone equally. His ability to support and share his knowledge to everyone in such a way that everyone understands is unmatched.

Bob has been so important in multiple apprentices and their development throughout the years, mine included. He always is there for help and supports us all in our development. Equally he is easily approachable and always down for a good laugh and as such he picks us all up when we are down and need a good laugh.

I feel that Bob is a shining example of the learning, development and investing in people. There are so many apprentices that have spoken so very highly of him over the years and that cannot speak highly enough of how he has helped them through the apprenticeship.“

Joe Palmer

Said the following about Bob Barker:

“Bob really invested his time and energy into me and many other apprentices throughout the years he spent lecturing us. Without him, I wouldn’t have achieved the amount of things I currently have done. He was always there to support us and coach us at any time, whether it would be inside or outside of working hours. Bob took great pride in our learning and made sure our learning was fun and engaging. Not only did he support us in our learning but in our personal lives too, and if there was ever a sign that we weren’t quite ourselves, he’d always pull us to one side and chat with us. Out of all of my schooling/training life, I never had anyone quite as supportive and influential as Bob!“
