The RailStaff Awards 2024

Vince Tennison

Said the following about Intertrain UK Ltd:

“I am a relative recent novice to the rail industry but I have externally audited Intertrain’s team for two years previously before coming on board and also being part of their team. I have contract managed the training of over thirty different training providers prior to joining Intertrain and have witnessed an eclectic range of sectors and working practices - Intertrain has always stood out from the rest.

The board regularly supports philanthropic projects, management team work in very challenging circumstances, the delivery team’s passion and knowledge of the railway is second to none and the backroom staff are so important yet rarely do they get the recognition they deserve.

For me it is the little things that speak so loudly and what makes the team at Intertrain exceptional and deserve getting nominated for Training Team of the Year. Fundamental reflections are:– getting together at least three times a year is no mean feat and involves over 60 staff travelling from all over the UK to attend (as well as the financial investment the company puts into the downtime), the actual travelling the team do in order to meet the customer’s needs, the mandated L4 teaching qualification that the team embarked on (over £75k investment), the internal Apprentices that we have supported all speak of dedication and a drive to do a professional job. I wish the team all the best and good luck with this nomination.“

Said the following about Intertrain UK Ltd:

“The whole team at Intertrain have over the last 12 months been involved in a colossus amount of activity that has seen the company involved in community projects, fund raising for team members, creating industry unique competence management systems, moving the entire headquarters to new premises – all the while supporting new Apprentices coming into the industry as well as those who require Safety Critical competency training. The enthusiasm the team has shown has been astonishing, particularly when one considers how they have supported some sensitive and major projects such as the Offender Rehabilitation programme and Princes Trust has been way above expectations which has resulted in some great success stories.

The recent move to Intertrain’s new headquarters has required a concerted team effort to consolidate the numerous Doncaster satellite offices and training facilities to the Balby Court Business campus within a two week window (which included building a twin 70 metre track facility with OHL capabilities). This involved a significant amount of planning and logistics in which all of the team showed excellent team work and a unified approach that ultimately deserves recognising.

Equally impressive, over the last year the team worked together to come up with a new unique competency management system that is at the vanguard of employee / employer interfacing. This is additional to the new and unique online customer booking system! The fruits of the team’s efforts are now being seen as the industry enthusiastically receives this new innovative technology, allowing circa 750 + employees to take charge of their own development and booking their own courses from the touch of a button (mobile app) as well as having the ability to be updated with new rule book changes no matter where they are in the UK! The team created this, the team implemented this and the team continuously provide excellent customer service to support this!

As well as the day-to-day activities; colleagues have been supporting one of their own through taking part in fundraising events to try and purchase software that will assist one of the team’s 4 year old daughter to communicate for the first time in her life through eye / retina software; 21 mile walks, white collar boxing and sponsored weight loss schemes have all been going on outside of work time. Additionally for some, whilst they have had to contend with challenging professional lives, sponsored events they have also been completing an arduous L4 Teaching qualification as well!

Finally, all of the team from the backroom admin support staff to the delivery team consistently contribute to making a real difference through supporting young individuals who have had a poor start in life and are trying to get on that first ladder of employment; hard to reach individuals in the Princes Trust, Offenders, NEETs and work experience all have benefited from a great Intertrain team that are forever doing more than is required, going that extra mile for someone and ultimately making life changing learning opportunities for people.“

Said the following about Intertrain UK Ltd:

“The Prince’s Trust works with disadvantaged young people aged 13 – 30 and Intertrain has been a partner of The Trust in the Doncaster area working with us on our Youth Contract supporting NEET young people and more recently by delivering a Get into programme supporting young people aged 16 – 25 who want to work within the rail industry.

The Trust has 5 values – Approachable, Non-judgmental, Inspiring, Empowering and Passionate - that we also look for in our partners and every member of staff we have worked with at Intertrain has shown the values. It is clearly imbedded within the organisation and means that the young people we both support gain the best possible experience and opportunities available to help them move forward and make something of their lives!“

Said the following about Intertrain UK Ltd:

“At HMP & YOI Hatfield Resettlement Prison one of our key objectives is reducing reoffending, to be able to that effectively we need to build a network of like minded partners, who can see beyond the stigma that prisoners are often badged with. We are fortunate to have excellent partners such as Intertrain who provide prisoners with the opportunity to work and train in the community and real work place environments gaining valuable experience and knowledge. There are a number of key inhibitors which can restrict prisoners resettlement and reintegration back in to society, including employment and training. Having visited the Intertrain facilities and speaking with staff, managers, learners and employees including numerous prisoners I am absolutely certain that this organisation is at the forefront of assisting Hatfield and its residents in leading law abiding productive lives in the future. Our partnership with Intertrain is one we value highly it helps provide prisoners with direction and to use a cliché which is apt in the rail business "it provides a light at the end of what has for many been a very dark tunnel"“

Nicolette Sweet

Said the following about Intertrain UK Ltd:

“Siemens Rail Automation engaged with InterTrain (UK) Ltd in June 2014 to discuss the potential of a managed service for our Network Rail track safety requirements.

The proposal, led by Nick Richards, was handled professionally and efficiently by working to the agreed timescales for implementing a new service for our business. Nick and his team worked closely with us to establish our requirements and expectations. Regular meetings were scheduled to monitor implementation progress and identify any shortfalls and improvements.

The service provided by InterTrain successfully manages the track safety competences for over 900 Siemens Rail Automation employees and includes a dedicated Portal where our employees can view and manage their competences, course bookings and Rule Books. There is a supporting App available for Android and Apple devices that provide accessibility to those employees that work in the track environment. There are other support functions available to managers and our own Sentinel Coordinators.

We have a dedicated point of contact, Lauren Hynes, who deals with our employees in a friendly and prompt manner. Lauren ensures that initial and renewal training and assessments are scheduled in a timely manner which supports our commitment to our customers. Lauren is always willing to help with any query and if she doesn’t know the answer she will ensure that she finds it out and responds as quickly as possible.

The entire training team at InterTrain are approachable and willing to share industry communications and knowledge. There has been positive feedback from those employees trained regarding the effectiveness of their trainer and the training delivery methods applied.

After establishing a solid working relationship with the InterTrain team we have worked with them on other training requirements aside from track safety. Hayley Astle, our Account Manager, has handled these training enquiries speedily and ensured that all logistics are covered for a successful training event.

We are delighted with the customer service levels that are experienced working with Intertrain.“

Said the following about Intertrain UK Ltd:

“The team at Intertrain have over the last three years been consistently providing high quality Apprenticeships that have resulted in Ofsted Outstanding success rates. This is no mean feat and requires repeatedly going above and beyond to provide the necessary support and guidance; in some cases with challenging learners in order that they achieve their qualifications and hopefully sustain a life-long career on the railways. Good luck Intertrain on your nomination!“

Barry Mudd

Said the following about Intertrain UK Ltd:

“All the team at Intertrain have brought valued contributions to our sub contracted provision. They are continuously improving their services in the quest of meeting the highest of standards set by the various regulatory bodies and always try to go above and beyond in order to satisfy our requests.

Their training supports the rail engineering mandate of reducing the skills gaps currently residing within the sector by providing Apprentices that have skills that are well beyond the qualification requirements and do not receive any funding for these additional tickets! Good luck to Intertrain in their nomination and we wish them all the best!“
