Said the following about Greig Gibson:

“One Saturday, Greig was the Driver of 2J02 a four car 156-unit. Greig observed an unusual shape as he was passing over the viaduct at about 35mph and thought it could be a person.

Although he wasn’t a 100 percent sure due to the darkness and weather conditions. Greig placed the train into Emergency and made a Rail Emergency Call (REC) to the signaller at WSCC Cathcart Workstation. He went on to explain to the signaller on duty and asked for lines to be blocked and permission to go back and investigate. Once permission was given, Greig spoke with the duty on train conductor and explained the situation. After walking 75-100 yards on the viaduct, Greig discovered a young female who was sitting with her legs dangling over the wall. Greig engaged in a conversation and quickly realised that the female was very vulnerable’, bleeding and appeared to be intoxicated. After reassuring her who he was, Greig managed to persuade the female to come off the wall, but the young female was unsteady on her feet. Greig asked if she wanted to come sit on the train, but the female declined as she did not want to see any other passengers. Greig continued to talk with the female further and offered reassurance. He suggested that the female could sit in the back cab with the Conductor. At this point the female agreed and board the train. Greig was then able to return to the drivers cab to contact the signaller to get permission to continue. On arrival at station and the female got off the train saying, “I know where I live now” and pointed back down towards the viaduct. Greig updated the Signaller and advised that he was not going to move as he believed that once he did depart the station the female would have put herself in more danger or worse. The Signaller was in full agreement and Greig managed to convince the female to get back on the train and go to station. There were station staff present and the situation had been escalated to British Transport Police.

Greig's vigilance, instinct and calm approach throughout ensured that the young female did not come to harm and she got the vital help that she required.“
