Nominations for Rail Team of the Year

Kath Martin

Said the following about GN/TL REO Team:

“The Rail Enforcement Team of Great Northern and Thameslink never fail to deliver. Covering over 100 stations from Bedfordshire and Norfolk, through the London Core and to the borders of Essex and Sussex.

The challenges the team deal with and overcome on a daily basis are immense. They play a pivotal role in deterring, reducing and preventing anti- social behaviour on our network, but more importantly offer the much- needed visible reassurance to our staff, passengers and those in crisis.

To date this year, the REO team have made 12 suicide interventions and assisted 114 vulnerable people. Working in collaboration with partners, this has enabled those people to receive the urgent signposting and safeguarding required. Further to this the team have also undertook projects on board services ,promoting health and wellbeing with charities such as Andy’s Man Club, working on board with representatives from Homeless charities and organisations as well as days of action at targeted stations alongside Samaritans and British Transport Police.

Over 3500 on board patrols and 3600 station visits have been performed enabling the team to engage with staff and passengers alike. Being actively mobile and accessible has generated some fantastic results. Over 500 Intelligence reports have been passed to BTP and the team have initiated 81 arrests to date. These arrests have also resulted in convictions at court, some for serious offences. Education also plays a big part in the Teams focus and delivering targeted safety talks at schools along the route has raised awareness in track safety and impacted on acceptable behaviours on the railway.

The Teams ethos is to make the railway safer for everybody using a problem-solving approach. I have never come across a team that has been so flexible and adaptable, be it in changes to shifts, locations, projects or tasks. Their motivation and willingness is outstanding.“
