Nominations for Samaritans Lifesaver

Said the following about Garry Letts:

“It is my honour to nominate the Driver Garry Letts for the Samaritans Lifesaver Award for their selflessness and empathy shown towards a stranger in need.

One evening, all trains in the surrounding area were brought to a stand-still as reports came in of a member of the public walking between the running rails using their mobile phone. Whilst waiting on a red aspect and communicating with his passengers, Driver Garry Letts spotted the person on the rails. Instantly informing the signaller and securing the train, Driver Letts left his cab and made his way towards the member of the public.

On approach Garry could see that the gentleman was in distress, he had lay down with his head mere inches from the conductor rail. Garry did not panic or raise his voice, instead, he gently approached them and began engaging him in light conversation. Building trust with personable conversation and keeping the gentleman focused on him, Garry was able to encourage the man off the rails and into a place of safety. Garry then sat with this gentleman and listened to his story; he had been turned away from the local mental health support facility leaving him in a state of despair. Whilst actively listening to the gentleman’s story Garry observed cuts to his arms and neck, further confirming that this man needed help and support. Garry stayed with the gentleman whilst the Emergency services arrived and ensured he was safe.

Empathy saved that man's life that night, and it was the empathy shown by Driver Garry Letts. Garry prioritised this person and gave his time to truly listen and acknowledge this man's struggle and cry for help. Garry could have easily sat with his train and waited for the aspect to turn green, however, his true nature to help another human being took over and he acted with true selflessness that night. Thank you, Garry“
