Nominations for Rail Person of the Year

Victoria O'Reilly

Said the following about Elliott Waters:

“There is not another person i personally know that is more Railway than Elliott!!

After leaving school Elliott joined the railway as a engineering apprentice which after qualifying took him all around the country learning his trade and being part of major projects, such as the rebuild of London Blackfriars. After many years here he then moved to Southeastern within their train planning team. This could be challenging at times but Elliott was in his element and enjoyed the attention to detail of the role. Onwards form there and he became Station manager of Sevenoaks and surrounding stations on the Kent route. Here Elliott used his people skills both in management and many times on TV! He would often pop up on regional news discussing the projects around the stations and any community issues re the railway. After many years as a Station Manager here and at London Victoria, Elliot seconded to GBRTT - he wanted to play a part in making the railway a better a simpler journey for passengers. Elliott is also part of the team planning Rail 200!

The thing that makes Elliott stand out for me, is what he also does outside of work in his own time on the Railway! In 2022 Elliott took on the role of Choir Master for the Southeastern choir. He spends his personal time composing tracks, rehearsing and performing with the choir at Railway events. Does he have weekends off? No! Elliott volunteers for the Kent and East Sussex Railway as a dispatcher, conductor and waiter! Oh and did I mention the historic talks he gives to community groups on the Kent railway!

Elliott is a great representative for the railway and his love for trains is infectious! I believe Elliott is our Rail Person of the year!“

David Drewry

Said the following about Elliott Waters:

“Elliott is a truly genuine person who does nothing but help others in what he does. He helps in all walks of life, from charity events to community talks, being a supportive manager and being that listening ear. He has the railway running through him, and does everything to benefit others. Nothing is ever too much, and he is very flexible so that he works around your needs rather than his own. He is always positive and smiley when you see him, which rubs off on everyone around him.

He has been there for me when I have needed support the most, as a manager he went truly above what I could have hoped when my Dad passed away. He went above and beyond, and has done the same for other colleagues who have experienced similar.

Elliott is a truly great colleague and manager and a true worthy winner of Rail person of the Year.“

Traxx Choir

Said the following about Elliott Waters:

“Elliott has been instrumental in continuing of Southeastern’s very own Traxx Choir. In his own time he creates the arrangements, runs the rehearsals, and provides teaching and support to choir members. He leads the choir at internal and external events, all of which receive high praise and a big amount of satisfaction for those who attend,

Elliott has been a brilliant role model and cares passionately about his role. He takes the time to ensure each individual member of the choir is comfortable and clear about their part. He puts so much of his own time into developing the music itself and making it easy for the choir to access and understand the resources he develops. He takes seriously that the choir represents Southeastern and drives the choir to do the very best they can.

He's quickly become the glue that holds the choir together and takes a personal interest in every individual. His positive attitude radiates, which is evident in rehearsals and performances.

Elliott has been amazing, he offered to do separate support sessions for anyone who needed extra help, he's learned all the parts so he's able to guide all the different voices, he keeps us positive and he kicks us up the backside when we need it! We couldn't do it without him.

He’s such a selfless person who dedicates so much time to us as a choir along with the hundreds of other things he does, we just couldn’t do it without him and are incredibly grateful. He is certainly deserving of Rail person of the Year!“

Kevin Bulled

Said the following about Elliott Waters:

“Elliott is a very energetic individual who never ceases to bring a smile to everyone’s faces.

He volunteers with us at the Kent & East Sussex Railway in various roles including Silver Service waiting, and as a Train Guard. He is never shy to turn his hand to a new skill, or experience. He also assists in the development and training of new volunteers, who regularly comment on his positive attitude and skills as a teacher. Elliott has a very good way of dealing with customers, and can always think of an appropriate but sensitive way to respond to an ever challenging situation. He’s proven this on many of our Pullman charter trains and Real Ale Trains, turning potentially serious or reputation situations in to a positive experience through talk.

Elliott has also recently become involved with the K&ESR’s twinned railway in France, and is going out of his way to learn language and cultures to ensure that relationship continues to grow. He is dedicated to every task he does, and is certainly a rail person through and through.

On a personal level Elliott has grown considerably as an individual whilst I have known him, and is someone that is trusted to deliver. Elliott is a great friend and colleague at the K&ESR and is very worthy of Rail person of the Year.“
