Said the following about Deborah Hargreaves:

“Deborah stopped a potential tragedy by speaking to a suicidal passenger. Unlike other cases of vulnerable people, this passenger was not located on the platform itself but was milling around the steps and station entrance.

Deborah noticed that the passenger was upset, and spent a lengthy period of time speaking with them. She kept them away from the platform and out of danger.

Deborah’s actions really shone through in this case: she identified an individual who wasn’t on the platform acting suspiciously, so could have been missed by others. She distracted them from negative thoughts and calmed the passenger down even making the mood a little bit lighter-hearted.

Deborah demonstrated key skills which we expect in an outstanding station assistant: she was alert to her surroundings, she intervened with confidence, and she showed compassion for passengers. She is an excellent ambassador for the railways and thoroughly deserves to be acknowledged.

Deborah went above and beyond in this case. By ensuring the passengers made plans to meet a loved one, and escorting them to the train, she was able to ensure that they stayed safe at all times. The passenger told Deborah “You saved my life”.“
