The RailStaff Awards 2024

Matt Adamson

Said the following about Colin Guard:

“I would like to nominate Colin for being the most exceptional driver mentor. Colin is a mainline driver with C2C but puts himself forward to be an instructor for new trainees in order to mentor them for the 240 driving hours required to become competent.

In an environment where mistakes and poor performance are (quite rightly) dealt with very seriously, there is often little or no recognition for when somebody consistently does a fantastic job.

Colin’s knowledge of the railway and the route is second to none. He keeps himself up to date with rule changes and new developments and I have not encountered anything yet that he does not know. This retention of knowledge is simply down to his hard work and conscientiousness.

I have been with Colin, as his trainee now for nearly five months. It is incredible and astounding the level of patience and understanding he shows to his trainees. He genuinely eases any nerves, dismisses any negative thoughts I may have and in doing so creates an atmosphere where I can learn, understand and simply be the best I could possibly be.

Colin is the most professional person I have ever worked with in any of my roles, in all the different careers I have had in my working life.

He is always punctual, extremely reliable and takes such a pride in his performance and the way he is seen by others.

It is highly evident that Colin takes immense pride in his role and wants to mentor to the best of his ability and ensure that his trainee is fully equipped to pass out as a competent driver with the most information and experiences possible.

Colin will go to great lengths to provide all the information, be it new rule changes, policies or hand outs that he will use his own time to produce for me, all in order to help me as much as he can.

I strongly believe that with any other mentor I would not have got to the stage I am at now and I can think of no other person who could deserve this award more than Colin. He is absolute asset to C2C and the railway in general and fully deserves all the recognition he should receive.“
