The RailStaff Awards 2024

Said the following about Clive Slayford:

“Clive has worked within the transport and shipping sector for many years, joining Freightliner in 1999. His time working at Evergreen Marine Shipping gave him a great insight into the service needs of the industry. He has taken his experience working at a shipping line and translated that into a Customer Service Model for the inland transportation sector.

As there are many parts to the supply chain - transport provider, shipping line transport teams, sales team, import and export service teams and the end users, it is easy for specific requirements to be ‘lost in translation’. Clive has made it an integral part of his service to bring those parties together to discuss their specific needs to ensure that we all get it just right. This has proven particularly successful with our VIP Shipping Line customers and some household names such as JCB and Luxury for Less to name but two.

Clive is a very inclusive individual and has found a way through sport to open connections to rail and Freightliner to a wider audience. In addition to the challenges of his day job, he has continually explored opportunities to foster relationships with clients outside of the working environment where Freightliner colleagues and customers at all levels, can come together.

For the past four years Clive has organised five-a-side tournaments in Southampton and Romford, which has brought together members of the industry for a very informal and friendly gathering. Team members included operational staff, office workers from relatively junior clerical staff to European M.D.s - something that you don't often see.

The football events are always well attended with very positive feedback from customers.

At the recent industry-wide Rail Sports event, Clive was an active member taking part in a fairly intense five-a-side competition which he had to break from part way though to run a 5k!

And in the last few weeks, Clive’s team in Southampton have started a Tuesday night running club which is open to all.

Here are just a few comments from customers in support of Clive’s nomination:

“Clive has been an integral part of building the very strong relationship between CMA CGM Group and Freightliner Ltd. He has ensured continuity within our business as he moved into his new role giving us an excellent replacement account manager. Clive’s contribution toward ensuring sustained support form CMA CGM Group toward Freightliner has been pivotal for us and we thank him for it.”

Jonathan Paine, Director – Inland Operations, CMA CGM UK Shipping Agency

“We have only recently been working directly with Clive mainly around London Gateway and the associated rail volume transition; however I can honestly say nothing is ever too much trouble and his levels of customer service and professionalism are second to none, ultimately ensuring, wherever possible, that our business needs are always met.”

Marc Graham, Branch Manager, JF Hillebrand UK / Trans Ocean Bulk Logistics Ltd

“A genuine nice guy, always a pleasure to meet and do business with.”

Kevin Brighten, Head of Land Operations, UK & Ireland, APL

Clive’s natural ability to nurture relationships with customers and colleagues alike by bringing them together at ‘outside of work’ sporting events has led to an improved customer experience which has made a significant contribution to Freightliner’s intermodal commercial success.

Clive is a very worthy nominee for the Outstanding Customer Service Award.“
