Nominations for Samaritans Lifesaver

Edward Goddard

Said the following about Carl Jarvis:

“Carl is a lifesaver for passengers and Staff. Carl volunteers his own time to help others by leading the Southeastern Railway mental health advocacy program. Carl uses his skills on the frontline to help passengers in need. Carl was on shift as a station supervisor and noticed that a young male was in an unsafe position on the platform. Carl took the time to talk to the male and spoke for more than an hour. He managed to persuade the male to speak to the Samaritans. Two weeks later the male came to the station and Thanked Carl for his help. Well done Carl!“

Nathen Blandford

Said the following about Carl Jarvis:

“This person is passionate about his role as an advocate. There have been many incidents that he has been involved in, and leading these he always is aware of the safety and welfare of the passengers. He is a natural leader, very professional, using all the ethics that are advocated by South Eastern. He has a natural understanding of people who appear to be in distress and will identify this when fellow colleagues may not be aware. He also takes the lead in encouraging the passenger to safety and ensuring that the aftercare is put in place and continues to debrief the team if need be. He has a natural human empathy and is a very valued part of the team. And an amazing advocate for the welfare team.“

Lee Woolcott-Ellis

Said the following about Carl Jarvis:

“Carl recently went above and beyond when he spent over an hour at the end of a station platform winning the trust and confidence of a gentleman who had attended the station with the purpose of taking his life. The emergency services took a step back whilst Carl built a level of confidence with the man and eventually, he was able to bring the man to a place of safety and handed him to the emergency services for clinical care and support. This was a life saved that night. This is not the first time Carl has done this and knowing Carl very well, it will not be the last time either.

Carl is always helpful and available when at work to support colleagues, passengers and members of the general public. The safety of passengers during times of disruption is where he springs into action. There have been numerous occasions when lone females, young or elderly passengers have been left stranded at Stations last thing at night. He will frequently get his own vehicle to the station and take vulnerable people directly home in his vehicle, preventing any harm coming to them.

Carl supports me directly as the SE Mental Health Advocate Programme (peer-to-peer) Programme Coordinator, a role in which he provides mental health intervention to colleagues who may be struggling. As the MHA Coordinator, Carl looks after the day to day running of the Advocate Programme (which has been running for 6 years now at Southeastern). In that role he also provides ongoing support and safeguarding supervision to the Colleague Mental Health Advocates.

I cannot commend Carl enough.“
