Said the following about Toby Owen:

“I would like to nominate Toby Owen for the Rail Engineer of the year award for his continued exceptional project work, dedication to team development and mentorship.

Toby has over 25 years of experience as a civil engineer working in both the highways and railway environment. He spent many years designing bridges and other civil engineering structures but is now focused on the multi-disciplinary design of railway systems and associated infrastructure.

He has been with AECOM for over 6 years and has been instrumental in the delivery of many high-profile projects throughout. His most recent and ongoing project being Old Oak Common station works. This is a critical interface between the existing Great Western Main Line and the new HS2 station development. On this scheme Toby has been civils CRE, delivering a range of projects including a contiguous retaining wall, OLE facilitation and bridge work. With Toby’s leadership, the Old Oak Common civils team has successfully delivered numerous assets over the last 3 years of the project despite complex interfaces and challenges.

Toby has been instrumental in driving improvements in design procedure and technical approach. He is passionate about putting sustainability and environmental impact at the forefront of design, including them within the hazard reviews to ensure opportunities are highlighted.

Toby is a great support to everyone in the team, always making time for more junior members and making sure we are heard and feel supported. His approach to leadership means he supports technically, focusing on our progression as engineers, as well as being open and supportive with regards to mental health, actively encouraging us all to feel more comfortable about talking.

I feel privileged to be able to work with Toby and cannot think of anyone more deserving of this award, recognising his ongoing hard work and commitment.
