“I nominate Sue for manager of the year award because she is such a genuine, caring and supportive manager for her team.
Sue has worked in the West Coast area for 16 years. In that time, she hasn't once faulted her responsibility, frequently working over and above her contracted hours to support her staff not just as their manager, but as their friend.
Recently Sue has been working with a member of staff in trouble with money. She has helped him to research what help is available to him and has provided him with emotional support when he has felt very alone. This is not an isolated case; she has helped another member of staff who lost multiple digits from Raynaud’s disease apply for Personal Independent Payments as he was unable to type on the computer to complete the forms, this is just another example amongst many where Sue has gone above and beyond for her team.
When I have asked Sue why she does what she does, she explains 'they are my team, for some of them, all they have is their work which they care about greatly, so for me to care about them in the same way they care about work, makes them feel valued and part of the railway family. Treat people how you want to be treated yourself and you'll find they will repay the kindness you have given them.'
Whilst being a caring manager for her team, Sue also seamlessly manages our Goodwood events from Chichester Station, is involved with accessibility improvement for GTR, has helped numerous staff progress to promotional roles within the business and also is a mentor for new managers.
Sue is a huge asset to my team, and I genuinely do not believe the West Coast Stations area would run so effortlessly without her.“
