The RailStaff Awards 2024

Nominations for Rail Manager of the Year

Lynn Norbury

Said the following about Stephen Green:

“In April 2016 Arriva Rail North took over the Rail Franchise for the North of England and Northern was born. This brought with it exciting changes and new challenges for many.

As the changes began, Stephen Green was in time appointed into the role of Travel Integration and Accessibility Manager which from a station management and safety compliance management background, was a totally fresh challenge for him. Although still in the early stages of the role Stephen has embraced it and continues to give it the 110% effort that we know and love him for and as such I sincerely believe that he deserves recognition in the form of this award. He is a true professional who always gets results. He is a remarkable leader who possess a special knack of understanding individuals which enables him to guide them in a way that they flourish.

As part of this role he is the front-runner of the team of 4 SQ Assessors who he has supported and helped to embed the processes involved with this new role which hasn’t been short of teething problems. I am personally extremely proud to be part of his team and feel invigorated by the positive nature that he oozes which is has a contagious effect on the whole team who are striving to excel and improve the ambience of our stations and trains to ensure that our customers feel safe, comfortable and return for future journeys.

Stephen is always there for the team and constantly remains positive when fresh solutions are required to enable us to mould the role into a system that works. Stephen’s dedication is extremely evident yet you never hear him complain, he takes everything in his stride and always delivers amazing and timely results regardless of how many ‘balls he is juggling’. With his effective leadership skills, knowledge patience and pure determination the team has managed to hit the train and station required audit targets each period even whilst trialling different methods of work to produce the best results.

Meanwhile, Stephen continues to listen to the teams feedback obtained from being ‘hands on’ and constructively works with IS to find financially viable solutions to update the technology that is used on a daily basis of which we are already starting to see take shape. App updates in the form of information content is the first improvement that we are seeing whilst work to improve the back office system which collates the App information continues.

We are confident that in time our work will have noticeably positive effects which can already be noted by the paint jobs and new poster cases that have already begun to develop the look and feel of our stations.

Years of dedication in an array of different roles has earnt Stephen an unchallengeable, unique reputation brimming with trust and respect from a vast selection of grades across the network so, it’s no surprise to learn that the relationships he has begun to build with the cycle groups and car park improvement teams that he manages in conjunction with SQ are building slowly yet stably. I have no doubt that in time, the results that his efforts in this area of the role, will achieve beneficial improvements for our existing customers and in turn these progressions will encourage new customers too. I can say this so adamantly because over the years of working around Stephen I have been fortunate enough to watch him work his magic on the following to name but a few:

• the successful regeneration of Manchester Victoria Station

• the creation and implementation of the Safety Compliance team and their subsequent results in ensuring all legal aspects of safety compliance requirements from the stations team were adhered to and ran smoothly

• the embedding of and maintenance of competency for the new gatelines

• staff welfare and development of all who he has been responsible for

• always going the extra mile to help customers and colleagues alike

• the precision and depth of methods and papers of which a lot of Stephens work has been shared amongst his peers for them to use as best practice.

Stephen is a very driven, focused and trustworthy individual who is completely passionate about delivering the best that he possibly can in order to contribute to creating and delivering the best possible customer experience. Every task is completed with a keen eye for detail, extensive knowledge and timely delivery which constantly provides results that benefit the business. Stephen displays strong personable behaviours and great leadership skills amongst his peers and directs his staff clearly and concisely whilst maintaining his approachable image.“

Said the following about Stephen Green:

“He's a passionate, professional, driven team leader who supports everyone equally regardless of their role in the business. He is a large reason I enjoy coming to work each day.

When I started working for Northern in late 2016, as a young person with no previous experience in the railway, I was nervous to ensure I was properly fulfilling my role. Steve made sure to mentor, encourage, and teach me persistently throughout. Most importantly for myself, he would break down challenging situations and show me the important lessons to take away from them. He pays close attention to individual work styles, enabling him to identify how best to communicate with each colleague. This keeps his team motivated and builds their confidence to each perform to the best of their ability.“
