Said the following about Sam Tibbitts:

“Sam joined Bridgeway in August 2013, following working at a Geotechnical Laboratory after graduating with a Civil Engineering Degree at Nottingham Trent University. Sam joined us with no previous railway experience, but with a willing attitude and an ability to focus on the task at hand.

Sam started work on Underwater Examinations for the Infrastructure Services department and helped to develop a robust process for the team following changes to requirements for collecting scour data. The role was initially office based, however, Sam has an appetite for learning and soon after completed the STE7 Underwater Examinations course, therefore allowing him the opportunity to join the teams in the field.

The teams were working in LNE & East Midlands, Anglia, Kent, Sussex and Wessex, working in remote rural environments, as well as inner city. Further training, such as Boat Handling, High Risk Confined Space’s, have made Sam one of the most versatile members of the Underwater Examinations Department.

Sam was instrumental in ensuring delivery of in excess of 600 no. underwater examinations in Yr 5 of CP4, however, it was his efforts producing reports and monitoring the teams quality standards that stood out above all else. In addition to this, Sam took it upon himself to take a lead on the task of understanding Network Rails (& JBA) Scour Database

Following commencement of CP5, Sam took the reins for the Midland Mainline Electrification (MMLE) Cable Route Survey. This survey required multiple teams on site at any one time, working days, nights, weekends, and requiring a number of various competencies.

Sam displayed strong management skills juggling planning constraints, competency managements, safe working hours and above all managing the teams on the ground. Sam’s efforts were instrumental to delivering the product to the clients whilst embracing new technology on this scheme.

In recent times, Sam has completed his STE4, Structural Examiners course and with the support of more experienced engineers, he has also completed a number of Inspections for Assessment.

Sam has a bright future in the rail industry and has gained a reputation for delivering a product even in trying circumstances.

I have no hesitation in recommending Sam for the award of Newcomer/Graduate of the Year and feel confident that his nomination will be fully supported, not only those of us within the business, but also by the many Clients and other Rail sector engineers he has come into contact with over the past couple of years.“
