The RailStaff Awards 2024

Nominations for Rail Person of the Year

Paul Bellfield

Said the following about Rodger Driver:

“I would like to nominate Northern Rail conductor Rodger Driver for the rail person of the year award because I believe he is an inspiration to all within Northern.

He is always going above and beyond the remit of his day to day role to make a real difference for his fellow colleagues and the customers who use our services.

He has a real passion for doing the right thing and making positive changes to how we operate within the company, and never stops thinking up innovative ways in which we can make improvements.

One example is the "2,4,6,8, reassure your customers' if you're late" campaign that he developed. This has resulted in customer satisfaction with on board information during delays rising to an all time high of 71% in our monthly customer surveys, within six months of it being briefed out. He developed the idea so that the customers needs were met, but also that it also took into account the his fellow conductors role and make sure they could deliver the information to our customers consistently in all operational situations or scenarios.

He is also an active Inclusion and Diversity Ambassador for the company, promoting Northern as an equal opportunities employer, both within the company and at outside community events. He is always friendly and willing to help his colleagues, who often go to him for advice. He has helped a colleague organise an charity three peaks challenge this spring, producing eye catching posters which were displayed across our depots. He also helped a conductor from another depot to develop her idea, and get it introduced across all depots.

Overall he has a unique way of looking at things, and he has the tenacity to adapt his ideas to overcome any problems that he faces. He is not afraid to step outside his comfort zone, ask questions and challenge the status quo, when he can see a way to improve things or do something better. It is this devotion, commitment and passion for making a difference, why I feel he should be recognised as the rail person of the year.“
