Said the following about Robert Porter:

“Robert is always actively looking for ways to encourage the staff he manages to develop and progress within SWR and beyond. He uses our regular Time with the Manager meetings as well as other conversations to get an understanding of how someone sees their plans for the future and any aspirations they have. Using this information, he looks out for existing or new courses, when they become available, and matches the course to the person. He also gives people ideas of what they can achieve that they may not have thought of themselves – Robert is always proactively looking for ways to help enhance colleague motivation through development as well as the station environment for all.

He has initiated several innovations to help staff learn and develop including the introduction of a dedicated Learning & Development space that is quiet and away from distractions and has a computer linked to the courses. This can be booked online by all staff. Robert also has produced a handy hints & tips guide for applying for jobs that include interview tips, sample questions, how to fill in applications and prepare CV's. He also encourages and arranges that his staff can visit the place they are applying to get a feel for the job and find out more before applying.

I myself successfully got a 12-month secondment thanks to Robert and his innovations and enthusiasm for helping his staff has also seen several others move on to other positions and takes he pride in knowing he has helped and is genuinely happy for them, this is what I believe makes a great leader and a better manager – Robert stands out to be as a very supportive individual who will always go the extra mile (even out of office time) to help, a worthwhile nomination and candidate for the Rail Staff Awards.“
