The RailStaff Awards 2024

Nominations for Apprentice of the Year

Vicky Patterson

Said the following about Rebecca Munro:

“I can honestly say that Becky’s contribution to Apprenticeships and to the promotion of STEM subjects is absolutely phenomenal. She works tirelessly for the benefit of others and I cannot recommend her highly enough to you. She would be a worthy winner of this award.

She is a star of the future, a fantastic example of an Apprentice and a superb Ambassador for the Industry.

Becky is a Technician Permanent Way Engineer at Mott MacDonald and offers support to the Engineers within her department. She helps them to deliver engineering solutions and assists them in the development of rail track capability projects.

Becky attends college one day a week, and the distance she travels is just over 110 miles. Although this commute is vast, she understands that the experience she will gain from college is invaluable and will enhance her work place learning. She is one of only two girls in her year (a total of 80 students), but takes this all in her stride. Every assignment that Becky submits, is a pleasure to read and is always produced to the highest standard.

Becky successfully completed her Advanced Technical Apprenticeship in 2016, gaining a Distinction*Distinction* - the highest grade possible.

Her NVQ portfolio was absolutely outstanding and is held up as best practise. She used her portfolio, to prepare for her Technician Professional Review (EngTech MICE), which she passed with flying colours.

Becky performed so brilliantly at her professional interview, that her Reviewers have nominated her for the prestigious Institution of Civil Engineers - Jean Venables Medal.

This is particularly remarkable considering she only has three years of industry experience!

Becky has now progressed onto the Higher Level Apprenticeship and is performing superbly.

She is well thought of at work, and is used as a positive Role Model and Case Study, in order to attract other women into Engineering Apprenticeships.

Becky has undertaken a wealth of training, including:

• Professional Body webinars

• Microstation and 3D course

• Network Rail Personal Track Safety (PTS) competency – which demonstrates she is competent to visit Network Rail live operational infrastructure. This allows her to be involved with survey works.

Becky’s work ethic and commitment to the Construction and Rail Industry is further demonstrated by the following:

She was nominated and won:

• National BTEC Awards 2017 – Apprentice of the Year (16-18years old)

Becky was presented with her award at a Parliamentary reception at the House of Commons, followed by an award ceremony at the Royal Horticultural Halls

• ‘Best Apprentice Under 25’ at the Women in Construction Awards.

She has also been nominated and shortlisted as a finalist for the:

• Apprentice of the Year at the Builder & Engineer Awards

• Trainee of the Year at CCIHWY 2017

• Top 20 ‘Upcoming Female Engineers’ competition

What is particularly lovely - is the fact that Becky was incredibly proud and humbled by all of her nominations. She is a wonderful unassuming character.

Becky particularly enjoys mentoring younger Apprentices, as she can easily relate to the experience they're undergoing. She recognises that working with young people is incredibly rewarding and is great for her own personal development.

On her own initiative, Becky chose to set up a STEM Ambassadors group at work. Being responsible for the STEM group gives her a great sense of pride and allows her to promote engineering to future generations.

Becky was also appointed as the Corporate and Social Representative for the York Office. She is passionate about volunteering, and enjoys motivating others to do the same. Her role includes helping to organise:

• Charitable events

• Office drives - including collections for food banks

• Sports events – which bring employees together to raise money, while encouraging a healthy lifestyle and camaraderie

• Building better communities – helping employees participate in community construction projects outside of the work environment

To summarise, Becky is extremely hard working and will always go the extra mile in order to contribute to society, and to make the world a better place.

She is enthusiastic and strives to motivate as many people as possible. She is a wonderful role model for young Apprentices in the Construction and Rail Industry, and is most deserving of this award.“
