Said the following about Rachel Stockton:

“Rachel is well known amongst colleagues for giving up her own time to help others, and is always there to listen should you have any problems. Taking this into consideration Rachel’s actions during a suicide prevention do not surprise us at Northern Rail, as they were carried out not only as part of her duties, but because it was in her nature to do so.

She was working in her role of conductor on the service between Wakefield Westgate and Huddersfield, when the driver applied the brakes prior to stopping at Deighton platform. Through her knowledge of the role, and knowing they hadn’t stopped at a signal Rachel contacted the driver to find out the reason for stopping.

After finding out there was a suicidal female on the line, Rachel approached the distressed lady and offered a friendly face to talk to and the assurance that she needed. It was at this stage that the lady broke down in tears, and opened up about her intentions to end her life. Rachel was observed by the driver of the train standing on the opposite line hugging the female, and comforting her throughout what was a challenging situation for all. During the intervention Rachel remained calm and professional, despite the lady accidentally stubbing her cigarette out on Rachel’s arm.

When we praised Rachel’s actions on this day, she was taken aback by the reaction and thanked the transport police and local management team for their assistance throughout the process.“
