Nominations for Rail Manager of the Year

Miguel De Barros

Said the following about Paddy Hawksworth:

“Paddy is an excellent manager who has supported me multiple times over the couple of years he's been around at my station. The greatest thing for me is that he has never ignored me when I needed a manager, and whenever I had a problem, and always offered his support even in situations he doesn't really have to. I hope he realises the difference that he makes.

Paddy goes above and beyond and for that reason I believe he deserves this award.

The prompt manner in which Paddy offers his assistance in times when our station is under severe pressure is much appreciated and the high degree to which his actions help us all individually and collectively should neither be ignored nor underestimated. Thank you, Paddy. You have my maximum respect particularly for never ignoring me when I obviously need help.“

James bartlett

Said the following about Paddy Hawksworth:

“I would like to nominate Paddy. He is a manager who goes above and beyond, not just for me personally, but for all of his staff. Paddy always made sure his staff were looked after and would even chip in and help operationally at the station with dispatch in busy times. He always made sure the welfare of his staff came first and even took time out of his personal life to check in and make sure we were okay when there were any incidents at the station.

Paddy also did a great deal for me personally during my time off with long covid. Never before have I had a manager take the time to check on me weekly, listen to my troubles and offer support and encouragement which ultimately boosted my mental health tenfold and resulted in a successful return to work.

Paddy treats his staff like family and always puts them before himself and that is truly amazing. He is a true credit to the company and fully deserves this award.“

Louie Stewart

Said the following about Paddy Hawksworth:

“I'm nominating Paddy because, without a doubt, he is the best manager I've had during my career in any form of employment, let alone the challenging environment of the railway.

There are countless examples of why he should win this award.

His selflessness as a manager is unparalleled in my opinion, and going above and beyond is an understatement. I'd never before heard a manager tell, emphasise, and reinforce to their staff that even though they're their manager, they work for them. He makes me and I'm sure many others feel empowered and comfortable coming to him with any nature of the issue. I don't know how, but he has an amazing capacity to share his time with so many people with such an attentive and personal touch.

I know he tries his best to help our frontline staff deliver the best customer service to our customers, even though he is sometimes bound by a litany of red tape and policies.

His most compelling quality, in my opinion, is his 'do as I do' rather than 'do as I say' style of management. He most definitely leads his teams by example, getting stuck in and sharing the heat during difficult operational moments. Also, the way he sees no task too little or beneath himself, as I've often seen him with his tie tucked in and his sleeves rolled up to help with some of the more undesirable tasks.

In summary, I'm sure there are many deserving nominees in this category, and regardless of whether he wins or not, he should be shown recognition and appreciation by those under and above him. Give this man his flowers.“

Sam Gunner

Said the following about Paddy Hawksworth:

“Ex-manager of mine, a fantastic individual. When he first arrived from management at Debenhams he arrived, put his Hi-Viz on and said teach me everything you know to all the members of staff, he’s pragmatic, democratic and a leader who leads from the front but also makes sure no one falls behind. Strives for greatness but listens to staff. I have never felt so heard as an employee, to this day I still remark to my current colleagues in my new TOC how he was, how he arrived, how he built a team, and how he gained the respect of the staff that some would call ‘dinosaurs’ and changed their way of thinking. He was there on an emotional side too when personal things got on top of what was happening he would help out by lending an ear as long as it took, there was no them and us with him, if I wished to use his office to have my learning time from educational advancement he set up for me that was fine, he put the passenger at the forefront of the station, building on the ‘we’re with you’ ethos of Southern providing a visual presence at the station during disruption, he was not afraid to be put in the line of fire“

Tony Healey

Said the following about Paddy Hawksworth:

“Although Paddy is no longer Manager for my station he definitely deserves this award. He will always take time out for every member of staff to help with any issues, always goes the extra mile with every passenger when on platforms and will do his utmost to assist with any problems.

I must also say he is always visual too, out and about no matter how busy he is interacting with everyone, a real breath of fresh air and it was an honour to work for him.“

Jonathan Louis

Said the following about Paddy Hawksworth:

“Firstly I would like to say I am grateful to have met such a dedicated human to growing not only the business but the people around him. Paddy exudes a great personality with an abundance of knowledge which brings truth and transparency to the forefront. He does not shy away from challenges with his natural de-escalation approach and methodology. Staff members all over the network are rooting for you, far and near as you've taken on big challenges in the last couple of years at East Croydon and have shifted the over seasoned mindset to create an everlasting team cohesion. Once again thank Paddy from the bottom of our hearts for creating a fantastic environment for the members of GTR as a template for all. I wish you the best in all your future endeavours and hope to see you soon.“

Glen Downing

Said the following about Paddy Hawksworth:

“I'd like to nominate Paddy for manager if the year as this is something he thoroughly deserves. Paddy is always very approachable and possesses a positive can do attitude.

He always finds the time to come and say hello and assists with anything that you might need help with. Praise was always forthcoming whenever Paddy saw fit which is always rewarding for me.

As well as a leader he would work as part of the team at Haywards Heath and there isn't a single job at the station that he isn't prepared to do himself. For this he got my total respect and it would be nice to see Paddy get the recognition that he deserves.“

Mark Organ

Said the following about Paddy Hawksworth:

“I would like to nominate Paddy Hawksworth for manager of the year due to his outstanding leadership skills and his ability to inspire, encourage teamwork and lead by example.

In my 40-plus years on the railway, I have never met a manager who cares as much for his team as Paddy does,

You genuinely feel he cares about your well-being not just paying lip service and box ticking which is sadly normally the case.

He’s the first to offer help with any problems even if he’s passing through and you are not even his staff.

He would be a worthy winner and I’m sure he has a bright future in the rail industry.“

Ashley Watkins

Said the following about Paddy Hawksworth:

“Paddy is an exceptional manager within the rail industry.

He leads his teams well, even in your darkest times he'll always be there to be someone who you can comfortably talk to.

He is very much a manager that leads from the front. He was always out on the platform giving great interactions with customers and making sure they had all the information they needed.

He is very much an inspirational manager never one to shy away from tough days and makes sure he gives his best for the travelling public and his team.

That's why he should be manager of the year!“

Unfortunately he is no long our manager and now at Croydon but one day we had major delays paddy got off the train and helped out answerering questions taking the pressure off us.

Paddy Deserves this award always putting others first .“

James Carter

Said the following about Paddy Hawksworth:

“I have nominated Paddy for this award because he is up there as the best manager I've worked under.

Paddy came from outside the railway and took to working in this different environment like a duck to water.

He never demanded huge changes but he used his man management skills and treating staff as individuals to get things done.

He had a work force that wanted to work for him and he gained everyone's respect. If he asked you for a favour, you did it because it was for him.

He's main attributes were he was never shy in disruption, confrontation or generally helping his staff out in time of need.

This is why he deserves all the praise and hopefully the award.“

Graham Budd

Stephen Dowding

Said the following about Paddy Hawksworth:

“He was the best manager we ever had. I have never known a manager to run a station at such a high standard and to have the morale to be at its highest point. Personally for me he was there when I've been through loosing my nan who I was very close to, even on his days off calling me and meeting for a coffe to make sure that I wasn't alone. Paddy truly deserves this award for his dedication to the job and to his stuff through thick and thin.“

Joshua Higgins

Said the following about Paddy Hawksworth:

“I would like to nominate Paddy as I have had the pleasure of working under his leadership during Football events in the past. Paddy's ability to lead the team but also feel approachable is second to none. He always makes you feel listened too if we have feedback or an issue and it actually feels like things are taken on board and changed instead of just remaining the same.

Paddy achieved a great deal in our area before he left and I'm sure the East Croydon team are being well looked after now too!“

Subasna Richardson

When I had some issues at work he was there to listen and help. I also always admired his work ethic and interest in gaining knowledge of all aspects of the railway such as the ticket office where I work.“
