Said the following about Oliver Johnston:

“Oliver is a Graduate Civil Engineer on the Crossrail C360 shaft and adits Costain Skanska Joint Venture (CSJV) team. He is committed to his job role and the project, acting as a champion to achieving Crossrail’s target zero and the Crossrail and CSJV values.

Continually demonstrating his commitment to health and safety, Oliver leads by example, taking a proactive approach by conducting safety focussed briefings and toolbox talks. Through his professional attitude Oliver drives the culture of safe behaviour and attitudes amongst his colleagues and the workforce onsite. He continues to work closely with his colleagues and the frontline workforce by developing his own initiatives to be implemented. Many of Oliver’s ideas have become best practice ways of working. For example, he has developed standard safe systems of working and defined optimum levels of control relating to the safe management of sprayed concrete lining (SCL) works in tunnels. This is a key role in ensuring the safe continuation of SCL works.

Oliver’s Manager had this to say “It has been a pleasure working with Oliver and as an individual who always strives for the best for the project without seeking reward; Every day he shows more and more enthusiasm as a young engineer who is thirsty to learn and help others. Quite unexpectedly, his skills, capabilities and experience has developed at such a rate that they are on a par in terms of quality with his more senior peers, which has made him a multi-skilled and indispensable member of our team. He can cope well under pressure and manages complex works within tight and challenging delivery constraints. In keeping with his enthusiastic nature, he is always keen to accept a challenge and continually build on his knowledge and skills on his route to professional development. He has most certainly had a lot to do with driving the project to progress within programme, to cost and the achievement of target zero in safety. Oliver now truly deserves praise and recognition for the world class standard of work he has completed and been a part of.”

Certainly evident in the quality of work he produces, Oliver is committed to delivering results while inspiring others to work to identical high standards. He does this through forming innovative and adaptable approaches to challenges the he and his team face.

Oliver is a mature and professional individual who thrives on the high pressure that working on a large infrastructure project presents. His humble and respectful demeanour means he is approachable and can take on advice. Oliver continually demonstrates a high level of complex engineering knowledge. He uses this knowledge to mentor less experienced apprentices and engineers, to share his experiences, to aid them in their development and understanding, within the diverse and complex working environment in tunnelling and SCL works on the Crossrail project. He has enjoyed being able to take on the mentoring of these apprentices and engineers, who have fed-back that they are grateful for his insight, assistance and continued support. With Olivers support they are able to take on and deal with complex tasks with greater confidence and independence.“
