Said the following about Nigel Husk:

“Nigel Husk has only been in the rail industry for a year, but has brought a wealth of knowledge and experience from his previous employment working with civil and military plant. He has quickly established himself within TXM Plants Safety, Health, Environment and Quality Team (SHEQ)

With the introduction of the a Mobile Safety Briefing Van to TXM he has taken Safety to our Rail Road Vehicle (RRV) Operator at sites, being it a remote site with one machine, a busy blockade running 24/7 or TXM Depots. With his enthusiasm and cheerful manner, even in the middle of the night, whilst offering warm drinks Nigel has been conducted Safety Briefing/Toolbox talks with the workforce at their point of work and being a close call champion his visits have increased general safety conversations from TXM staff and encouraged them to submit Close Calls. With the van versatility Nigel he also conducts face mask fit test whilst out and about.

As TXM has introduced a Witness Statement Reporting Form for mobiles and the Close Call App on his visits he can be seen persuading them to download and use it, and if they are not sure he will spend the time to help them download it.

Nigel has been instrumental in the developed of an Operator Maintainer training package and assisted in the delivery of the first course. As this will improve safety and reliability of the RRVs, as this allows operators to rectify minor issues on site safely or give a more detailed description of the equipment failure to allow the engineer to make a more comprehensive diagnostic of the fault.

In his first year Nigel has come a long way having done a Lift Planers, POS Supervisors course, attending various working groups, Safety meeting, Track Safety Alliance meeting and fulfilling a position on the Fatigue Working Group to understand the rail industry way of thinking, he has taking his previous skills and knowledge and adapting them to suit his new safety role within the rail industry. For these reasons I believe that Nigel is an ideal candidate for the Rail Safety person of the Year Award.“
