Said the following about Nicholas Bignell:

“Nick started with Amey as Rail Degree Apprentice (RDA) in the week when the UK went to lockdown due to Covid 19 and we started to work from home. It was a challenging time for any new starter and even harder for someone without any previous industry experience. But, Nick handled the situation well and made contacts via Teams chat, etc. and learnt about the railway industry within a short span of time.

He started to work with the ancillary civils design team and undertook design of several signal and sign foundations. He learnt calculation processes and standards through on the job learning and applied them in practice. Nick is now leading the sign foundation design package and presents his designs in multi-disciplinary design review meetings and answers any questions raised. This task is typically undertaken by someone at Senior Engineer level, which proves Nick has gained that level of competency within a short period.

Nick is one of the first RDAs of Amey. He now helps fresh RDAs with their work, studies and professional development and considered as a role model.

Nick keeps health, safety and welfare as the top priority. He raises valid questions when planning site works and ensures the safety of everyone at all times. He also became qualified as a first aider in our Swindon office.

Even though he’d able to become IEng with another institution through the RDA scheme, Nick proactively seeking to get EngTech qualification this year with the ICE, which clearly demonstrates his commitment to the professional development. In summary, Nick is an inspirational young professional with great potential to become a great leader for the rail industry.“

Geoff Eeles

Said the following about Nicholas Bignell:

“During his time at Amey, Nick has far exceeded the expectation that his role as an apprentice would carry. He has excelled in the use of structural design software and can turn around a design in very good time. He has grown in confidence and often leads design review meetings for the work he has produced. He is proactive in design and making decision for line side assets during site visits. He has taken the lead to mentor new peers in the rail degree apprenticeship programme and passes on the knowledge he has accumulated. He has engaged in many events and schemes including the Duke of Edinburgh.“

Sara Bowler

Said the following about Nicholas Bignell:

“Nicholas is now in the third year of his Degree Apprenticeship and his dedication and commitment to his learning and development is a reflection of his positive, can-do attitude. He is supportive of his fellow degree apprentices, taking time out to help and support wherever necessary whilst continually looking at ways he can also support his colleagues and co-workers. On top of his studies and busy project deadlines he successfully completed his Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award which is a fantastic achievement in it's own right but complete this on top of his studies and tight project deadlines is no mean feat! He is always professional, courteous and is a well respected member of the team as well as a popular member of the cohort. It's been, and continues to be a privilege to watch his development journey and see his confidence grow.“

James Parkes

Said the following about Nicholas Bignell:

“I have nominated Nicholas for his amazing development so far, working at a level above being an Apprentice, his willingness to learn and ask questions demonstrating that he will go far. Nicholas has been challenged to do things more experienced engineers would worry about and he was able to deliver. Nicholas is keenly aware of the importance of Integration and has demonstrated through following engineering process, and asking questions where guidance is needed, has delivered integrated designs.“

Paul Evans

Said the following about Nicholas Bignell:

“Nick has just started the third year of the Graduate Apprentice Scheme having joined Amey right at the start of the Covid Pandemic. I would like to nominate him for the Apprentice of the Year award as I think he demonstrates all the attributes for him to be considered as a role model for his Apprentice peers. Nick is extremely proactive and is very keen to take on additional responsibility. Over the past year he has taken the lead design role to deliver the Signalling Signage foundations designs on the TAM route sections within Package 4&5 of the Core Valley Lines (CVL) project with minimal supervision needed and has shown great resolve and dedication to sort out the numerous issues that arose throughout that project. Nick has also taken the lead role in arranging and attending numerous site visits on the Core Valley Lines Project to undertake surveys of the areas where new signalling infrastructure is required, including the production of task briefing sheets and arranging the site safety staff to oversee these surveys. He is now working across both Package 4/5 (Ancillary Civils) and Package 7 (Stations and Footbridges) on the CVL project and is showing a great passion to widen his experience and to learn new things. He is an extremely valuable member of the Civils design team and we look forward to him continuing his blossoming career development.“

Rajagopal Thirumaran

Said the following about Nicholas Bignell:

“Nick is part of ancillary Civils team, I managed as Civils’ design CRE & project engineer.

I provided him high level BIM guidance to improve our 3D speed signs models traceability. He picked up meeting points quickly and did an amazing job to speed signs scope. I gave feedback to him the important of academic qualifications. It is amazing he is managing his studies and work well.

He is a young professional with lots of maturity. As an example, if speed signs Civils forms require urgent updates to comply with technical assurance, Nick “can do attribute” make this possible. I noticed that he provided time and followed it later.

He helped my team leads to document calculation checking sheets in our internal server/ProjectWise environment.

He is extremely valuable member to Civils team. Amey signalling colleagues praised Nick’s contribution to signalling scope in various meetings.

I would like to nominate him for the Apprentice of the Year award.“

Aaron Robinson
