“The New Street Fitter team are based at Birmingham New Street.
They are a team of technicians who provide technical assistance on the station providing 24/7 cover. They are also responsible for the greater midlands area. They attend callouts anywhere between Shrewsbury, Hereford, Bromsgrove, Redditch, Lichfield, Coventry and down towards Bletchley.
The team have a vast array of railway and rolling stock knowledge. They have over 200 years of expertise between them and it’s still clocking up.
The team have had a difficult few years due to increase in demand for their assistance across the Midlands. The team have been short staffed due to many factors but despite this, they keep going, they consistently provide technical cover and assistance across the Midlands. They go above and beyond to keep New Street station moving. To me, they are like the AA, they are there when you need them but a lot of people don't notice that they exist.
This is a quick snapshot of why I think they should be Rail Team of the Year.“
