Said the following about Neena Naylor:

“Neena Naylor is a dispatcher at Birmingham New Street, at approx 13.00hrs on Saturday 16th May I heard Neena call over the radio that she was worried about the well being of a young Female who was stood on the platform edge of 10B. I at this point looked at the CCTV and could quite clearly see that the Female was looking vunerable and not taking any notice of anyone or anything going on her around her. I could see Neena attempting to talk to the Female and encourage a conversation? With this I made my way down to platform 10 and once there I could see Neena engaging with the Female who was extreemly distraught, reasons unknown but neena seemed to have gained the confidence of the Female and was slowly getting through. BTP had been requested and a block on the line had been made and a few minuets later the BTP arrived and the female was detained. In my opinion if Neena had not recognised and acted upon her feelings of what she was witnessing the Female may have come to some harm. Neena demonstrated a professional calm individual and took control of a harrowing situation, I believe Neena is a credit to her profession for being out there doing her job and being aware of her surroundings.

Said the following about Neena Naylor:

“I was also on shift when Neena spotted a female acting suspiciously on the end of one of our platforms. I witnessed Neena handling the situation in a very professional manner and in a way that she had clearly taken on board from attending courses with the company (such as through Samaritans) involving spotting potentially suicidal people and what to do in such a situation. She maintained a comfortable distance so not to be too intrusive and made several attempts to converse with the female to try to divert her attention from what she was thinking of doing. Although the female was fairly unresponsive, it seemed clear that Neena was having a stalling effect on the situation. The time bought proved to be invaluable.

Although it's something we hope to never have to deal with, Neena was in her element and clearly knew how to handle it, and did so in a way that meant the situation was resolved quickly and with a successful outcome

Neena has taken it on herself to become an ambassador at New Street for raising awareness of mental health issues and illnesses, encouraging staff to enroll on courses and taster sessions, which lots of people have taken up. This is clearly something that is close to her heart, and her passion for it is reflected in her efforts to spread the word and her handling of the situation of the suicidal female“

Said the following about Neena Naylor:

“At the time when the young female was standing on the platform edge.

Hearing Neena's call we nervously saw the female on the platform edge(CCTV), we could see both Neena and the vulnerable female, by watching Neena's mannerisms you could tell that Neena had everthing in hand and you could slowly see the lady walking back towards Neena, Neena managed to keep the female talking until the BTP arrived which must of seemed like hours.

After the event Neena then came up and spoke to people and shared her experience and what stood out to me was that she was talking about how she spoke to the female and the different techniques she used and by Neena speaking out about this I feel more confident to approach people who look vulnerable and I would say I'm more aware.

Neena also attends several courses such as understanding mental health, Samaritans, sign language, Charity's and many more...

Which shows how passionate she is, when I think of Neena I think calm, cool and collective.

:)“

Said the following about Neena Naylor:

“One Saturday afternoon in May Neena was working at Birmingham New Street as a train dispatcher when she became aware of a female member of the public who was clearly in a distressed state.

Birmingham New Street is a highly pressurised environment at the best of times. The platforms are always very busy with passengers and it can be very noisy both with project works ongoing 24/7 and with trains (both diesel and electric) pulling in and out constantly. Add to this mix the fact that there was a traumatic suicide at the station last year and it's really impressive how Neena, with remarkable calmness, managed to engage the distressed individual, to strike up a conversation and keep her from doing anything to harm herself until the BTP arrived on the scene.

Neena is a dedicated member of the team who cares deeply about the people using the station and I am not surprised by her intervention in this incident. She is a credit to the industry and a most worthy nominee for this award.“

Martin Colmey

Said the following about Neena Naylor:

“Whilst carrying out her normal duties at Birmingham New Street station on 16th May 2015, Neena noticed a member of the public on the platform edge who looked to be in distress. Bravely Neena approached the young lady and began to talk to her in order to get a response.

With no response Neena arranged for the line to be blocked to train movements and for the British Transport Police to be alerted.

Neena continued to talk in a calm and supportive manner to the young lady when suddenly she burst into tears. Neena was able to gain the confidence of the young lady and take her away from the platform edge and to safety.

Neena's Samaritans training helped her immensely in dealing with an individual who had the intent to harm herself, but it still took incredible courage on Neena's part to step in and help. Her actions undoubtedly saved a life that day and her story should be celebrated and shared!“

Andy Knowles

Said the following about Neena Naylor:

“Neena was carrying out her usual train dispatch duties on the 16th May 2015 when she noticed a female passenger showing signs of distress, due to the training and understanding Neena had about the body language the person was showing Neena felt the person maybe contemplating harming herself. Neena observed at first then approached the lady remember the training she had undertaken with the Samaritans talking randomly to her so she could make a better assessment, Neena kept calm and in control throughout and also was able to alert others so support could be gained.

What makes me proud of Neena was not only dealing with the situation and helping save a life which is an incredible achievement but also Neena has promoted the training Samaritans offer to the other team members so others have now attended. Neena has also used this experience to help show our new starters things to be aware of.“

Daniel Adshead

Said the following about Neena Naylor:

“Being a fellow train dispatcher at Birmingham New Street, I was on shift that day on the 16Th May when we heard on the radio about Neena being concerned about the female on the end of the platform. A call that we all hope will never happen to us, however we are all trained in how to approach situations like this, but we never know how we would react when faced with a situation un-folding.

From the moment Neena became concerned about lady we all knew that her first concern would be for her welfare and would do everything that she could to bring this situation to a positive outcome. Which of course it did, Neena stayed calm and professional from the very beginning resulting in a very successful resolution, and it is no doubt that without her being there and the re-assurance that She showed, the outcome could have been very different.

I hope that if I ever come across this situation that I can live up to the same way that Neena re-acted. On the station we are all very proud of what she has done and it is credit to be able call Neena one of our colleagues.“
