The RailStaff Awards 2024

Nominations for Lifetime Achievement

Lee Spicer

Said the following about Markus Hackney:

“I first met Marcus 22 years ago, when he interviewed me, he was a team leader at the time. He was also a trainer, teaching tickets, penalty fares, train evacuation and pretty much everything. So thorough with an attention to detail. As a team leader he was very firm but fair. He left the railway and came back as an on train host and now platform staff at Royston Station. This man's knowledge of the railways is phenomenal and his customer service skills are the best you will ever witness anywhere on the railway. He is so helpful, and with his wealth of knowledge, is wasted on the platform. He leads by example and is loved by many. If anyone deserves this award he truly does.“

Said the following about Markus Hackney:

“I met Markus on my first day on the railway, nearly 17years ago. He was my team leader, now he is one of the platform supervisors at Royston. His knowledge and customer service skills are phenomenal...you won't find any better anywhere and that's a fact!

He's the best person to have on your side.... There are not enough words to describe just how much I love and appreciate this man.... He's not just a colleague but he is part of my family. I even call him Dad and he introduces me as his daughter, which has been hilarious at times to see some of the confused looks and comments we've received over the years, as I'm a blond white girl! Haha

The love and support I've received from him over the years has been incredible and I know without doubt if I ever need help, he will always be there by my side. It's not just me that feels like this, as he is loved and respected by everyone including our passengers. He always offer help and support to anyone, whether they ask for it or not, which is most appreciated.

Markus Hackney is the best man on the railway and one of the best men I know! I'd be totally lost without him!

Please vote for Markus!!!! ?❤️“

“I have worked with Markus for over 10 years and I now have the absolute pleasure of being his station manager. What can I say that his colleagues haven't already! Markus is a true gentleman, his soft Texan accent calms both customers and staff and his professionalism shines through no matter what the situation is. Nothing is ever too much trouble for his customers or colleagues.I have enjoyed my shifts over the years with him. We share a love of food, always a conversation between us!! I know how much this nomination will mean to him and the team at Royston. Vote Markus!“

Said the following about Markus Hackney:

“What can I not say about this great person , I had the joy of working with markus for fewer years and what an experience, his knowledge and skill are amazing . When I joined the railway in 2013 if am not mistaken he moved from a revenue role to a Safety critical role and passenger facing role and his mentoring skills were phenomenal, his professional guidance and manners are top grade . He is funny , well spoken , well groomed and in style of a perfect gentleman. Thank you for being a great coworker Sir Markus .“
