Nominations for Customer Service Award

Melinda Owen

Said the following about Jonathan Louis:

“I had the pleasure of crossing paths with this lovely young gentleman during one of my commutes to London. His presence alone brightened up my day. My first encounter with Jonathan was via a train announcement. He made a lighthearted joke which I found quite amusing. Minutes later he walked through the train and entered the carriage that I was sitting in. He stopped to greet me. I was quite surprised that he had the time to stop to say hello as I know how busy working in Customer Service can be. We had a lovely chat and his kind words warmed my heart. He did not know that I had been going through hardship however his kind words that he spoke were a light at the end of the dark tunnel. To this day, he does not know how much he has helped me, he helped me to restore my faith and realise that I already have the mindset that I need to move onto my next chapter in life. Jonathan is truly one of a kind, he cheered me up. He provided an experience that I will never forget. He went above and beyond his role as a customer service train supervisor and I can definitely see him going very far in his career.“

Said the following about Jonathan Louis:

“I am writing to nominate Jonathan Louis for the RailStaff Customer Service Award in the UK railway industry. As a On-board Train Supervisor(OBS), Jonathan Louis has demonstrated exceptional customer service skills and has consistently gone above and beyond to ensure that passengers have a positive experience.

I have personally witnessed the following events while on his trains:

A warm and welcoming greeting announcement when passengers board his trains.

He knows when to deliver light-hearted announcements to lighten the mood on his trains.

During service disruptions, he gives timely fashioned announcements updating his train passengers on what is happening.

He makes safety announcements advising customers to discreetly inform him of any noticeable unattended items.

He is highly skilled in handling challenging situations of antisocial behaviour on his trains via de-escalating the situation in a timely fashion with an amicable outcome.

He makes connecting train announcements just before his trains pull into Hub/Terminal railway stations.

Other On-board Train Supervisor(OBS) passing on his trains have been witnessed asking him questions on how he can coach them in being confident enough to deliver their announcements in the unique way he does it, and he was patient with them as they learned from him as he delivers a master class in attaining the pinnacle of engaging fantastic passenger service experience on his train.

I once had a passenger say to him something along the lines of “You are the Southern railway man in a bow tie that people are talking about online right because of your beautiful informative train announcements?” He just smiled humbly and said it could have been one of my other Southern colleagues doing a good job.

In addition, Jonathan Louis has demonstrated exceptional customer service skills in handling challenging situations like fare evasion, teenagers playing music that is excessively loud on his train, and dealt with other incidents by demonstrating a cool head.

I would also like to bring to your attention that Jonathan Louis has shown great compassion and professionalism when dealing with passengers who are going through difficult times. In one instance, during the early hours of the morning, an IC1 male passenger attempted to take his own life as he could not get the funds to live in his property facing eviction. The passenger ran towards Jonathan with threatening behaviour and the threat of following through with suicide (after he claimed to have many failed attempts which were clearly seen on his body). Jonathan spoke highly of the gentleman letting him know despite significant loss we have life to live and try again. The IC1 male froze and ran out of the station.

In another instance, Jonathan was racially assaulted and dealt with the incident in a way I have never seen before. Not only was he calm and professional, but the perpetrator gave said horrific slurs and still bought a ticket after pushing through the gates too. The person was shell shocked that the slanders and threats of violence did not break his smile and did not speak for the rest of the journey. He apologized after.

I believe that Jonathan Louis would be an excellent candidate for this award and would be a great representative of the company. Thank you for your consideration.“

Said the following about Jonathan Louis:

“My customer service award nomination is for Jonathan Louis. I must say that I have become accustomed to riding with Jonathan and quite look forward to the announcement confirming that I have, yet again, boarded another train under the operation of Mr Louis. I find his professionalism and informative presentation to be phenomenal.

There was an occasion that the end of my jacket got caught in the door as it closed. Thankfully, due to the diligence of Jonathan, he was able to free me from a potentially disasterous and embarrassing situation. He never ceases to make me feel safe and reassured as a passenger whilst also providing some light-hearted amusement at times. He is always very pleasant and helpful, which would cause even the grumpiest of passengers to smile. His smooth undertone seals the deal. When introducing himself, the script is never the same, so journeys are never dull when riding on a Southern Rail train, driven by Jonathan Louis.

Despite often being in a rush, I now take the time to board the train from the front, just to say hello. On successful occasions, I am always very impressed by his immaculate uniform. This man displays all the qualities of an excellent customer service representative.“
