Nominations for Rail Engineer of the Year

Wanda Simpson

Said the following about Janine Bootland:

“I would like to nominate Janine as a dedicated engineer who consistently delivers high quality submissions. Her expertise in station design has been instrumental to the successful delivery of critical schemes on the Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU).

This was especially paramount when presenting to the validation panel during which Janine presented the proposed design options and led the subsequent discussion on behalf of the Designated Project Engineer (DPE) going beyond the role of Station Contractor’s Responsible Engineer (CRE). Janine led conversations on the design with multiple stakeholders which included the train operating company (TOC), council and network rail representative, ensuring the best option for the design was clearly outlined, so all stakeholders could agree with it. Janine’s role as Station CRE, looking after various stations between and including Stalybridge and Slaithwaite Station, allowed her to continuously improve the way these meetings were held and executed. Which eventually led to the team for Marsden Station receiving a TRU award of Team of the Month. As the feedback from Samir Sobeih Project Manager for TRU Section W2A/B below shows, Janine was a key player in that success.

Samir Sobeih said - Janine continued to guide the team throughout the W2C ES3 Option G process with her engineering judgement, expertise, and experience in relation to all stations design works, which in turn delivered engineering solutions and value for money outputs to stakeholders. This is something that was recognised on numerous occasions as we received great feedback from the stakeholders following validation panels, which is something Janine was at the centre of developing. Janine always aims to drive the right engineering solution within the design process whilst taking stakeholders along the journey. Janine supports new members of the design team and always offers her time to help those who reach out. Janine’s professionalism and attitude is infectious to other members of the team and she’s an asset to both the Amey and TRU team.

Another great success for Janine and her leadership and technical expertise was when she overcame an onsite issue very quickly which could have led to major construction delays. During the construction of the duct route within the Stalybridge station platform, it quickly became clear that compliant depth could not be achieved. Janine was able to redesign and agree on the design with the assurance team due to her great relationship with the project engineer (PE) and Contractor’s Engineering Manager (CEM). Janine led the team to deliver a resubmission of an AFC including assurance and signoff, drawing and document updates in 2 weeks which is an amazing achievement.

Janine is also a passionate STEM ambassador and goes above and beyond to mentor and develop junior staff. A great example of her commitment is her dedication to organising the Amey Challenge Cup in the York Office, which allows classes of year 8-9 girls into the design office environment to give them a taste of what it is like to be a professional engineer by completing an engineering challenge. For the last two years, Janine has been the sole organizer. This involves liaising with schools, organising volunteers, preparing presentations, getting props for the day, getting funding for and organising lunch as well as finding judges from the senior leads in Amey and client and supply chain organisations.

This year the Challenge Cup received the following feedback from the school's Teacher of Science - I just wanted to thank you. We all had a great time! I know so much organising goes into things like this and thank you for all being so approachable and helpful with the girls!“

Said the following about Janine Bootland:

“Janine is a fantastic ambassador for the Railway sector. An unassuming, extremely competent, rail civil engineer who excels in her field, Janine’s expertise in station design has been instrumental to the successful delivery of new station schemes for TransPennine Upgrade West.

Jannine organises colleagues to take part in outreach events such as the National Railway Museum’s Wonder Wednesday. She is a speaker at this year’s MK Innovates event in Milton Keynes, encouraging returners and sector jumpers to consider their transferrable skills and how they can be used within the Rail Sector. She also supports Work Experience placements for school children, one of whom went on to study Civil Engineering at Newcastle University and has returned to the rail team as a Graduate Engineer.

Janine has designed and run the Amey Challenge Cup event in York since 2019, a full day engineering challenge event providing school girls an insight into life as a railway engineer. Every year Janine has added to this event, this year providing VR headsets and fly throughs of the work she has designed on TRU West, really bringing rail engineering to life.

Janine is the ultimate problem solver, taking on every issue that is thrown at her and quietly delivering the solution. She is a fantastic team leader who draws the best out of her team, helping them to develop and grow via technical support, encouragement and trust, alongside the space to innovate and discuss new ideas.“

Said the following about Janine Bootland:

“I would like to nominate Janine who is a dedicated enthusiastic Engineer in Amey's York Design office

Janine has successfully run the Challenge Cup in York for the last few years. This is where a group of Year 9 female students from local schools are invited into our office and given an Engineering problem to solve. Janine has planned, obtained funding for and organised this as well as undertaking her full time role. She has liaised with the schools and had the concept tested in the office. Janine arranged for a judging team from our senior management and clients to come along to provide feedback to the girls, Janine also encouraged our graduates, students and apprentices to help on the day and guide the students rather than do the task for them, as well as arranging for people like myself to give an overview of a career in Civil Engineer.

Feedback from the schools involved has been excellent and has help sow the idea of a career in Engineering to the girls, something Janine is passionate about as she feels it is important that Civil Engineering is not seen as a male only career to young girls.

Janine is an excellent mentor to the staff who work for her or alongside her. She encourages and helps them to further their careers and if appropriate obtain professional qualification to help further their careers.

This has all been done whilst delivering high quality engineering designs, often with challenging timescales to solve complex problems such as the issues associated with Stalybridge station works during the blockade where site discoveries required urgent last minute changes to the design which was achieved by Janine and her team without adversely impacting the station handback.“
