Nominations for Depot & Freight Staff Award

Mark Coyle

Said the following about Jake Blood:

““Jake is a true professional who enjoys his job and is always looking for ways to improve our Operations”

During the trials for the large “Jumbo” trains out of the Peak district, to make sure the trials did not interfere with the regular day operations, Jake came in at weekends to do this work when it was quiet and wouldn’t disturb the normal operations. He then made sure everyone was kept up to speed with how things were going and briefed his staff

We are developing a new flow from Hillhead quarry and once again, Jake has spent a lot of his time there making sure it will run smoothly from Day One

In conjunction with Network Rail we reopened a new site at Leyland for a new aggregates flow from Tunstead and Jake trained, mentored and assessed his staff to ensure that they were safe understood the method of work there

Additionally, for this work, the Customer have given us a different type of wagon to work with. These wagons were not passed for “Driver Only Run Round” (DORR) where the driver uncouples and runs round their train on their own. This meant we would need to deploy an additional member of staff there to assist the Driver to do this

So Jake took it upon himself to understand what was required to make this a DORR location.

He undertook a site risk assessment to prove that the site was safe for this work and is now working with the Head of Engineering to get the wagons approved. When completed, this will make the work quicker and more efficient.
