Colin Vaughan

Said the following about Harji Hirani:

“Please note that this is a posthumous nomination.

Sadly on 02 June 2015 Harji died in service after more than 37 years working on the railway.

Harji had various roles on the railway up until 1992 when he successfully completed the driver MP12 course. For the next 23 years Harji drove for British Rail, Regional Railways, Cardiff Railway Company and Arriva Trains Wales but always on the Cardiff Valleys Network.

Known by his colleagues as the gentle giant Harji was a popular figure in the mess room and was always a part of the days' topic of conversation. His popularity was reflected in the numbers who turned out for his cremation.

Harji's wife told me that he thought of the railway as his second family and as a mark of respect to him she asked if he could be cremated in his full railway uniform.

Harji's colleagues have been looking for a way to commemorate his life (on the railway) and I feel that by honouring his dedication and service the on railway would be a fitting tribute to a popular railway man.“

James Blayney

Said the following about Harji Hirani:

“I worked alongside "Harry" for the last ten years of his long railway career. In that time, I cannot recall anyone having a bad word to say about him. Likewise, I cannot recall Harry having a bad word to say about anyone else. He was one of life's great characters and a true gentleman. As Colin Vaughan has already said, this would be a fitting tribute for the lifetime of service to the Railway that Harry provided through "thick and thin".“
