The RailStaff Awards 2024

Nominations for Rail Team of the Year

Andrew Perry

Said the following about GWR Apprentice Team:

“The Apprentice Team have achieved some incredible results this year culminating in the Investors in People Gold accreditation for “We Invest In Apprentices”.

The team of nine have continuously built their skills and knowledge and are considered industry leaders delivering 53,000 training hours in the year. These hours compromise 21 programmes at different levels (2-5) with 240 apprentices attending a rolling annual programme.

The team also deliver the Duke of Edinburgh Business Gold programme to the Customer Service and Engineering young apprentices and the Junior Life Skills safety programme in the south west and the Junior Citizens programme in Oxford.

Always looking to improve the apprenticeship experience for GWR employees, the team has also trialled a new invigilation process with Exeter College for functional skills exams. This process negates the need for the apprentice to travel to Exeter for the exam. They can instead use a laptop at their home depot whilst their exam is invigilated online. This is first time online invigilation has ever been agreed with any further education establishment in the country.

In addition to the Investors in People gold accreditation for “We Invest In Apprentices” the team has been recognised in the Rail Business Awards (highly commended), National Rail Awards (highly commended) and Winner of the Association of Colleges prestigious Beacon Award for outstanding partnership and engagement with Exeter College. Individuals in the team have also achieved notable accolades including "Higher Apprentice of the Year" for Exeter College“
