The RailStaff Awards 2024

Nominations for Rail Person of the Year

Jackie Fowler

Said the following about Edward Canner:

“In the eight years that I have been at Network Rail I have never felt the need to nominate anyone for a Network Rail Staff Awards - until this year!

Ed Canner's honesty and integrity puts him head and shoulders above his contemporaries - and he has only been in our industry for twenty months!

Ed is our Access Coordinator here at Reading Maintenance Depot and in that twenty months he has not only learned his role, responsibilities and his 'patch' but he goes about his work with an integrity that is rare in the workplace these days.

He remains calm despite being tested on a daily basis dealing with each discipline's access and planning issues, but always finding time to treat everyone the same whilst battling with other departments/outside parties (contractors) to secure our access. He will never give any false information or 'waffle' - just straight forward advice or recommendations therefore giving sections peace of mind that he is fighting your corner and do his utmost to win the battle, particularly in the busy and congested possessions we face with Crossrail currently.

He is a team player within his own team, covering other timescales when necessary but more importantly within all the sections/disciplines - without him we would not feel confident that what we require is being taken to Network Ops for publishing accordingly. Nothing seems too much trouble where Ed is concerned.

Ed collaborates with third parties where necessary and makes himself available if required to liaise with projects to secure our works.

Ed is a credit to his team, his depot and to Network Rail (particularly taking into account his age) and I think he will go far - this is why I request the recognition he deserves.“
