“Traincrew Supervisor Eddie Carpenter opened the depot up at 04:00 hrs , he was joined by our contract taxi driver Lawrence who had popped in to make an early morning brew. While doing so Lozz noticed flames coming from the stairwell on the down platform. Eddie, Lozz and Train Manager Natalie McIntyre immediately headed down to investigate, by which time the fire had spread. The fire brigade were called and in the meantime the team doused the fire using fire extinguishers.
When the fire brigade arrived to deal with the incident they thanked the staff for their intervention as without it there would have become a large scale blaze, with the depot stairwell and bridge being of a wooden structure.
