Said the following about Duncan Hayers:

“Duncan acted in an exempleray way when he noticed an incident that occurred at Penn Road foot crossing at approx 1945 on the 3rd of June.

Duncan Hayers, who works for Banbury S&T , whilst off-duty was walking to the shops near his house witnessed a youth stood in the 4ft of Penn Road foot crossing attempting to commit suicide. The quick actions of Duncan in flagging down the approaching train enabled it to stop in time short of the crossing preventing a loss of life, he then informed the control so we could in turn inform the Signaller, MOM and BTP. Duncan also then remained nearby so he could appraise the control of developments.“

Tracy Evans

Said the following about Duncan Hayers:

“Duncan was not on duty when this incident occurred. He spotted someone in the 4ft attempted to commit suicide. Yet he didn't walk on by. He reported it to the appropriate departments and ensured trains were stopped. Without his actions this would likely have resulted in loss of life and thanks to Duncan the young man concerned will hopefully get the help he needs.“

Richard Godwin

Said the following about Duncan Hayers:

“Whilst anyone who makes an intervention deserves praise and credit for their actions in potentially saving a life Duncan deserves special recognition as he was off duty at the time. He was still observant and looking out for anything unsafe on the Railway. He acted quickly to stop trains, inform the correct people and to then give up his time to remain at the scene. This is clear evidence that we can all play a part in looking out for vulnerable people whilst at work and out of work and the courses and materials that Samaritans provide gives people like Duncan the knowledge and training to make a difference. Well done Duncan.“
