Nominations for Depot Team of the Year

Ben Brooks

Said the following about Doncaster High Output Depot:

“Network Rail has a legacy scrap rail problem, largely borne out of post Hatfield re-railing work together with High Output Track Relaying System (TRS) introduction into the UK in 2005 without a sustainable rail recovery plan. This was exacerbated by a shortage of specialist trains to recover scrap efficiently and effectively.

As part of the High Output programme commitment to clear scrap rail behind TRS from 2014, Doncaster High Output depot developed an innovative and very cost effective solution.

The team added empty open wagons to the existing TRS train consist and used a road rail vehicle (RRV) already on site but not fully utilised to load 20ft scrap rail as part of the core renewals operation.

This innovation gives us capability to recover the scrap value of the rail (300km of material or £6m per annum for the programme as a whole) and remove a hazard from the Network for hardly any additional cost. A great example of re-thinking the process rather than finding an expensive high tech solution.

Other depots have now adopted the Doncaster model with both Wessex and WCML sites also being cleared in this manner.

Taking this a step further, the High Output team are now working closely with NSC fleet colleagues to build new rail recovery wagons into the TRS core train consist. This has potential to remove the requirement for an RRV altogether and also enables rail to be collected in longer more serviceable lengths.“
