“2024 will be Dan’s 20 th year in the rail industry.
He began his railway career in a planning role working for a
railway renewals company, coming straight out of university into a
role managing the training and competency requirements for a
large team of Road Rail vehicle operators. From there he joined the
freight operational planning team in Leeds.
After many years working in the rail freight sector, in 2021, Dan
started a new role supporting the emerging Express Freight
market. He has been focused on building Network Rail and
GBRTT’s knowledge of this sector, which has huge potential for
growth on rail.
Since he started the role, he has supported the latest freight
operator to join the network, Varamis Rail, who have successfully
launched a Midlands to Scotland Express Freight service. Dan has worked closely with them on their
expansion plans, pushing to open up more sites to act as road to rail facilities. He has helped to
establish relationships across the potential users of rail in the courier, express and parcel sector
including major online retailers and supermarkets and continues to work with them to help design
the right railway solutions. Dan has also been instrumental in the Cross River Partnership work,
looking at the impact of rail freight in London through an Express Freight Market Analysis and
especially the Waterloo Freight Hub.
Dan has also been working to support the implementation of a wider network of ‘Parcels as
Passengers’ solution - which will see in-service passenger trains able to carry low volume, high value
goods around the rail network. A vital workstream due to the increase in parcel demand and the
importance of moving goods quickly and in a sustainable way.
Growing rail freight is one of the most important aims for GBRTT and the wider industry. Dan’s work
is vital for rail freight to grow over the coming years. His innovation, passion and desire to support
the freight sector is second to none and the express freight work will have a huge impact on
opportunities for the freight sector, while contributing to net zero targets.“
