The RailStaff Awards 2024

Nominations for Rail Manager of the Year

Paul Edwards

Said the following about Clare Williams:

“I would like to nominate Clare as I believe that she deserves recognition for her commitment to encouraging and developing her team.

She has personally supported me throughout the last 5 years, firstly by supporting me after I was first on scene at a fatality. She ensured my wellbeing on the day and listened to how I was feeling and reacted accordingly by finding me other, meaningful work away from the station for a couple of weeks until we both felt it was right for me to return and even then she accompanied me on my first morning back. She had taken the time to learn about the impact of fatalities on witnesses and so was able to take a holistic approach to my care. From then on, she has helped build my confidence to apply for other roles and has supported me in the application and interview process by practising role plays and advising on structuring application forms. I'm not the only one she has supported in this way and I know she has dedicated time outside of her working hours to help colleagues develop in their careers. I feel that there are not many other managers that would do this.

A few years ago she left the area that I work in but has always remained a support for me and others in the area. For instance, there was a fatality at Purley recently and I called her for advice on how to best support the team as a couple were very upset and struggling to process what had happened. In her own time, outside of her working hours, she visited the station and met and talked to those who had been directly affected by the fatality. Her listening skills and ability to draw on her own experiences were really helpful to the team and I've had nothing but positive feedback since her visit.

She is due to take up a new role with Network Rail shortly and I know she will be greatly missed by those she has worked with over the last 6 years at Southern.“

Gary Stone

Said the following about Clare Williams:

“I am nominating Clare for this award as I believe she is one of Southern's biggest assets. She has always been there not just for me but for anyone who has needed her. She has an open door policy. When I first started in my new role she was there to offer me guidance and support 24 hours 7 days a week. She is well respected by the drivers who she manages and also by her colleagues. Claire is like the heart beat of our office and there is never a dull moment whenever she is around. I am proud to call her one of my colleagues.“

Danielle Johnson

Said the following about Clare Williams:

“I have nominated Clare Williams as since moving into the management team Clare has been my mentor and a manager who I gladly look up to with her wealth of knowledge of all aspects of the railway, who is fair and understanding. Clare has lots of fantastic ideas to help and support her colleagues as well as her past and present teams. Thank you Clare for all your support.“

Stephen Chichester

Said the following about Clare Williams:

“I would like to nominate Clare as I believe that she deserves the recognition.

She has been my main contact both when she worked at Victoria and now at Selhurst. Our roles need to work extremely closely and without her things would have been a lot harder.

She has always gone out of her way to personally help me and has been there even just to hear my frustrations.

She is a finisher, if she says she is going to do something you know it will be completed with a great amount of detail.

She is at the heart of the depot and always has a smile on her face. She is well respected within my team and it is a pleasure working with her. (She is easy to wind up though)

She is about to take up a new role with Network Rail which is good for her personal career but she will be a massive loss to our business and will leave a big hole for someone to fill.“
