Nominations for Graduate of the Year

Colin Morris

Said the following about Antonio Bravo:

“Antonio is one of our most impressive graduates. He began his time with us working in systems integration where he impressed his placement manager greatly by integrating a virtual reality style simulation with one of our existing simulators for a recent London underground project. His placement manager was so impressed that he took the time to invite managers and some of Antonio's peers along to showcase the work. In his time on our graduate programme Antonio has impressed all those that he has worked for but for the last 12 months has worked with great confidence and focus on state of the art signalling technology in particular the ETCS systems and the integration of these systems at ENIF giving in depth technical demonstrations to major stakeholders within the rail industry.

Antonio has also impressed us with his willingness to take on challenges outside of his normal work as part of the graduate scheme by entering events such as the IET's Present Around The World and at the IRSE's ASPECT conference.

Within Siemens Rail Automation Antonio has recently been a key player in an internal project based around the Digital Railway and has won a silver Champions award for his efforts within the team.

In addition to all of this he has been instrumental in working with myself and the National Skills Academy (NSARE) to help us implement our profiles within the SkillsID database.

All round Antonio is an extremely valuable member of the Siemens Rail Automation team and a real star for the future of railway signalling and worthy nominee and winner of this award.“

Luca Fracassi

Said the following about Antonio Bravo:

“I have been directly working with Antonio during the Digital Railway project, a joint project between Siemens Rail Automation and Siemens Rail Systems.

During this project Antonio has been leading our side of the team with his experience and considerable technical knowledge for a second year graduate.

He actively contributed to the production of a Product Portfolio of more than 80 products relevant to the Digital Railway. The portfolio has been presented to the steering committee, formed by several directors of Rail Automation and Rail Systems, and will be used in the future to understand from an holistic point of view the strengths and weaknesses of Siemens in these new arising technologies.

Additionally, Antonio is currently carrying out, together with his teammates, a Market Analysis aimed to understand if there are gaps to be filled in the Digital Railway market, and to understand the strengths and weaknesses of Siemens competitors in the market. The analysis will serve as final report for the Digital Railway project and will give recommendations on how Siemens can better approach the development of these new technologies and can better tackle the competition in the different fields identified.

I personally consider Antonio one of the hardest workers within our graduate program, and he has been very keen to help me and other first year graduates to approach the graduate program in the right way.“

Kevin Turner

Said the following about Antonio Bravo:

“Antonio’s attitude is exemplary. He is always happy to help others, nothing is too difficult to do, even when it means working long hours away from home – Antonio always goes the extra mile. On this basis alone, Antonio is an easy nomination for this award.

However, it is Antonio’s ability to perform real world engineering tasks at a performance level way beyond his job description which makes him an outstanding candidate for this award. He demonstrated this recently whilst working on a complex, novel and challenging tender. Using his ability to assimilate and abstract knowledge and information from his other assignments, Antonio was able to understand the relationships between the different disciplines and technologies of conventional signalling, mainline Automatic Train Protection and System Engineering. This allowed him to quickly understand whole system issues and solve them accordingly - skills and knowledge not normally acquired until significantly later in an engineer’s career, if at all.

Because of this, the already high performing team he was part of were able to free up an experienced engineer to work on other strategic areas of the tender – an unexpected and very welcome result of Antonio’s aptitude and hard work.“

John Hawkhead

Said the following about Antonio Bravo:

“Antonio is always a responsive and diligent individual, However, in a recent strategic tender, he excelled himself by taking on the responsibility for developing key architectural strategies and the production of important delivery documents to describe our proposals. Although English is not his first language, Antonio produced a highly technical document of excellent quality and led much of the technical team work it describes. He has a bright future.“

Darryl Baker

Said the following about Antonio Bravo:

“I have had the pleasure of knowing Antonio as a colleague and a friend over the past two years at Siemens Rail Automation.

His current career path has led him through a breadth of disciplines and technologies including our core interlocking, modular signalling, ETCS and initiative digital railway investigations. His determination to learn does him credit and enables him to be an active, productive, valued team member of the projects he’s worked on in a very short space of time.

Antonio’s work does not stop within the boundaries of the graduate programme, and has led him to present in a number of IET competitions and other external conferences such as Aspect.

I fully expect Antonio to excel and craft himself a rewarding career in the near future.“

Marta Jimenez

Said the following about Antonio Bravo:

“I am pleased to nominate Antonio as graduate of the year.

I started the programme back in September 2013 with Antonio and I have had the pleasure of knowing him, personally and professionally for two years.

Antonio is recognized as a high profile in our intake. He has received excellent feedback from every project and has always exceeded the expectations for a graduate engineer. He shows tenacity and perseverance in anything he does what makes him a great professional.

When I joined the ETCS department a few months ago, having Antonio as a colleague was a huge relief. He has always offered me support with anything I needed and has definitely made my transition into the new role easier. His generosity and integrity makes him a great colleague and friend.

I am confident that Antonio’s career will grow fast and he will always be a bright example for the people around him.“

Mayank Sharma

Said the following about Antonio Bravo:

“I have known Antonio for the last two years as a fellow graduate at Siemens Rail Automation. We started the graduate programme together back in 2013 and I have had the pleasure to know him both professionally and personally.

Antonio has been exemplary in every department he has worked with in the last two years and has a fantastic work ethic. He has already gained expertise in various new technologies involving modular signalling and ERTMS and is already a huge asset to the company. He has successfully worked with the ETCS frameworks team demonstrating our ETCS capabilities at network rails national ETCS integration facility and has become a key member of the ETCS delivery team.

Apart from work Antonio has constantly shown great determination in participating in STEM related activities and other railway related events such as IET's Present Around The World, IRSE's ASPECT conference and digital railway.

Antonio has a very selfless attitude towards his colleagues and is always approachable whenever needed. I have enjoyed working with him in the last two years and wish him all the best for the future.“

Carla Jefferies

Said the following about Antonio Bravo:

“I have worked with Antonio on a variety of projects over the past two years. Antonio has become an integral member of the team, assisting in the production of key tender documentation by utilising his ability to understand complex technical information and apply it to real life situations, producing robust estimates and identifying commercial opportunities along the way.

He frequently exceeds the graduate ‘norm’ by not being afraid to challenge the wider team when necessary and proposing creative and innovative solutions to the problems he encounters. He always goes the extra mile to ensure a task is completed to the standard required and always does so with a good spirit and enthusiasm.

I am sure Antonio has an exciting and prosperous career path ahead of him and it is a pleasure to be able to nominate him for this award.“

Chris Hardy

Said the following about Antonio Bravo:

“Antonio has worked for me both on site (at the ETCS National Integration Facility) and in the office. Clearly, he is hungry to learn and is able to quickly adapt and add value to some very demanding projects. It was also good for me to learn from his experience of other areas of the business, which I can apply in my area. But this is what I’d expect from a really good graduate…

However, what has really impressed me, and why I am nominating him, is the difference he has made on time-critical bid work on one of the business’s largest opportunities. He volunteered for this, knowing that it would involve great pressure, and then made sure that he was involved. In this work he has extended himself well above his grade, and become critical in the formation of the solution we offered, using both skills learnt in our team, and from previous placements. He has worked across organisational boundaries and offices, forming agreements and then recording them with quality and accuracy, often investing his own time. He has also met some opposition, sometimes simply because of his grade, which he has handled admirably and soldiered on, making a real difference.

Therefore I am happy to nominate Antonio for this award.“
