Nominations for Rail Engineer of the Year

Noel Dolphin

Said the following about Anesh Ramkhelawon:

“Anesh was the Lead Overhead Line Engineer on the Bath World Heritage Outline Electrification design. He designed and led a team that incorporated the new Series 1 system into an area with a high level of public / heritage and stakeholder interest. These designs have now set the precedence for the detail design for the Bath area, Brunel's Sydney Gardens and associated tunnels, including the famous Box Tunnel. Anesh has driven forward the need to review the safety and reliability of overhead line through Box Tunnel and has successfully established the use of conductor bar through significantly long tunnels with the Bath area. Working closely with other contractors and Network Rail, Anesh has also finalised the outline design to four major stations with the Bath area and provided technical expertise on Overhead Line throughout the development of the Great Western Route Modernisation Project.“

Carol Elvin

Rob Daffern

Said the following about Anesh Ramkhelawon:

“Anesh has been the name on the design solutions produced for the most difficult and complex areas worked on by my team this year. In particular the tunnels around the Bath world heritage sites. Anesh has worked tirelessly with the Client and many stakeholders through several iterations to ensure every opinion has had a voice, but has stood firmly on issues of safety and reliability where others tried to compromise. He has earned the respect of many colleagues by the polite and intelligent way he has engaged with novel and difficult challenges he has been set.“

Erica Cheuk

Said the following about Anesh Ramkhelawon:

“Being the project manager on the Bath World Heritage Outline Electrification design, I worked very closely with Anesh as the senior engineer and lead designer. Anesh faced challenging engineering demands due to the extremely sensitive nature of the route, balancing safety, aesthetics and value engineering to set the bar for design development. Anesh encouraged his team to be creative in finding design solutions in particularly sensitive areas and ensured that the team were not overwhelmed by the huge amount of information and interfaces effecting design.

Particularly challenging was the design through listed stations and tunnels. Anesh worked closely with the client, stakeholders and other contractors to understand their priorities, openly discussing the limits as well as potential solutions. One result of this is the use of conductor bar through Box Tunnel, a first for the UK rail industry.“
