The RailStaff Awards 2024

Nominations for Rail Manager of the Year

Harry Tong

Said the following about Andrew Backhouse:

“Andrew has been nominated for his outstanding commitment to the rail industry and the care, attention and compassion he has shown for his colleagues working on the front line of our railway.

Andrew leads his team by example. He consistently excels in his role as a Section Supervisor in the Leeds Delivery Unit and never shies away from a challenge. He’s always ready to adapt his own working patterns to ensure that important jobs, vital to the day-to-day operation of the railway, are completed on time. Andrew is regularly out installing rail switches and crossing in and around Leeds station – one of the busiest in the north of England. Despite working in very tight possessions and on bus sections of the railway, he never seems to get flustered, ensuring the job is done properly and on time for customers.

The fact that Andrew never asks anybody to complete a task he wouldn’t readily do himself reinforces the respect his team and other colleagues have for him. His motivation to do a good job never wavers, and he inspires the same commitment in everyone he works with. Always looking to improve and excel, and he regularly asks for feedback and always looks at how he can improve in his role.

Compassion for his colleagues is what truly sets Andrew apart. Whatever challenges they’re facing, at work or in their personal lives, he offers exceptional support to help them through it. Andrew consistently goes the extra mile to make sure that individuals are not only okay themselves, but able to carry out the important work needed on the railway. Safety, health and wellbeing are always the priority.

It’s usually ‘cliché’ to say ‘above and beyond’, but the saying accurately conveys Andrew’s efforts. These are not one-off exceptions. This attention is there for everyone unconditionally, and his colleagues can’t express the gratitude they feel towards him.

As Andrew’s manager Ian says, ‘The future’s bright, the future’s Backhouse!’“

Chris Brookes

Said the following about Andrew Backhouse:

“Andy is the future of Leeds P-way. If he can’t do it, it can’t be done. His knowledge is impressive for someone at a young age on the railway. Rather than be defeated, he always looks for ways to succeed and usually pulls it off. He not only excels in the practical aspect of railway maintenance but his people skills are second to none and he manages his staff with care. He’s always looking to work with us and help us with any obstacle that’s thrown our way. It has been a challenging couple of years for us with the banning of flags for look outs to modernising maintenance commencing. Andy has helped smooth out the process for us all by supporting us with the use of LOWS to replace the flags and always makes sure his staff are mentally fit for work. He always reminds us that he is always there for chat if ever we need him.“
