The RailStaff Awards 2024

Nominations for Award for Charity

Liam Nixon

Said the following about Alex Garnett - Scherer:

“Alex has raised £10,000 plus for LGBTQIA+, Windrush and Sickle Cell Society charities with this total still going up when writing this nomination, Alex has done this in the last two years alongside selling Poppy Appeal themed badges with a team at TfL

He has done this by arranging to have roundel badges made, themed around each event and sold them to staff to raise money for the charities. Not only have these sales reached TfL staff they have also reached other ToCs who have been keen to buy the colourful and standout badges while raising money for charity at the same time.

Alex has put in a lot of hours outside of work for these to be successful and to raise as much as possible for charity, including doing pop-up shops at TfL head office and never asks for help on the day and does it all in his own time.

Even though Alex has had a small team to support him doing this. 99% of the work has been done by himself, never once has Alex claimed it was all him and without fail says it is the team he is working with that makes this possible. This isn't 100% true as mentioned before Alex puts a lot of his own time into making this magic happen. Without Alex, none of these badges would have been possible.“

Chris Samson

Said the following about Alex Garnett - Scherer:

“Alex has been instrumental in leading on the successful campaign to promote TfL's 75th anniversary WIndrush themed pin badges.

Alex collaborated with colleagues from London Overground and TfL to ensure the badges were launched on a website alongside the Pride badges, with links to the poppy badges too.

He has done much of this in his own time and is driven by the intention to bring communities together by ensuring the proceeds from the badges are distributed to charities that are making a real difference in the community“

Martin Harris

Said the following about Alex Garnett - Scherer:

“Alex is a passionate and committed supporter of LGBT+ charities by fundraising from his wonderful pin badges.

In 2022 he raised £1,640 to support our work at Terrence Higgins Trust and this year he has kindly and generously supported us again, raising over £2,000.

When Alex visited our offices in 2022 it was clear he is a keen charity fundraiser aiming to help as many charities as possible.

All money raised will support our mission at Terrence Higgins Trust to end new cases of HIV in the UK by 2030.

Charities need more Alex's in the world!“
