Nominations for Station Staff of the Year

Owain Lewis

Said the following about Alan Conway:

“I am nominating Alan Conway for Station Staff of the year award because he is an outstanding member of the London Charing Cross team.

He works tirelessly and effectively and is always driven by doing all he can for the customers of London Charing Cross as well as his fellow colleagues.

He has been a figure of change at London Charing Cross, leading projects and being the driving force behind getting improvements completed at the station.

He has been a flexible worker, covering not only his own job but the covering the Shift Station Manager role when he is needed.

He works in conjunction with Southeastern to produce a monthly newsletter called "The Changing Times", promoting a One Team work environment at London Charing Cross.

I worked with Alan for almost 3 years and in that time I have seen him go above and beyond for customers and colleagues alike.

He is not deterred by a request and will do his best to complete any task given to him.

He spearheaded a campaign at London Charing Cross to get new Roller Shutters installed on the Underground entrance/exit stairs and escalators after he noticed that there was no way to block these routes off during an evacuation.

He spoke to contractors and got the prices and time scales and he put this forward to the management team at Charing Cross and there is now a safe way to secure London Charing Cross during a evacuation, the main benefit here is that no customers will accidentally come on to the station and in the way of danger, therefore saving lives!

I have dealt with evacuations and hostile situations with Alan as a colleague and I know that he has dealt with serious injuries and fatalities with other colleagues and in all situations he has been a constant professional, he has been a model of a what a Customer Service Assistant should be.

Every month Alan works along side Southeastern Railways Health and Wellbeing Champion Jamie Martin to create a newsletter called "The Changing Times" which is distributed amongst the staff of both London Charing Cross and Waterloo East station respectively.

Alan writes articles about the going ons of Network Rail around the station, staff updates and interviews, he uses his portion to introduce new staff, say goodbye to departing staff, highlight major station works or changes and keeping people update to date with the security situation.

This helps create a One Team attitude amongst the station, it tears down the barriers between Network Rail and Southeastern and keeps everyone on the same level as the London Charing Cross team.

Charing Cross are proud of him as a team member and I would like to nominate him for his hard work and dedication to a role he has worked and taken pride in for almost 10 years.

Alan Conway is a good friend, a great man and a invaluable and irreplaceable member of the Charing Cross team.“

Said the following about Alan Conway:

“I am nominating Alan Conway for station staff of the year award because he is an incredible member of staff who goes above and beyond his role. He will cover the role of manager at short notice therefore affecting his personal life to help his colleagues. He is a flexible worker who always go out of his way for his colleagues.

He will assist customers with prams and large amounts of luggage to where they need to get to as Charing Cross does not have lifts.

Alan works along side SE staff every month to produce an article about Network Rail in the SE newsletter, so there is no 'them' and 'us' attitude.

Alan was the only member of Network Rail staff to receive 'exceeded' on his personal review.“
