The RailStaff Awards 2024

Gary Stocker

Said the following about Adrian Pattison and Mark Neal:

“Following the acquisition of Freightliner by US railroad company Genesee & Wyoming (G&W) in March 2015, a recognised global safety leader in the industry, Freightliner was challenged with moving our already industry-leading safety performance to the next level – ‘Zero Injuries’.

With that goal in mind, Birmingham based Operations Manager Adrian Pattison and Multi Skilled Operative, Mark Neal have work tirelessly in pursuit of an accident free environment, taking on this additional responsibility on top of their already busy day-jobs.

Both have taken an active part in leading the three-monthly safety committee meetings and have worked in close cooperation with fellow Birmingham colleagues in delivering local safety briefings and training.

They have also encouraged others to use the open-door policy towards reporting any potential safety issues, thereby preventing accidents from occurring.

And the results speak for themselves; currently Birmingham terminal has achieved 963 days without a lost time accident – an outstanding accomplishment!

Whilst staff, contractors and visitors to our location have contributed to this excellent result, Adrian and Mark deserve special recognition and are very worthy nominees for the Rail Safety Persons of the Year award.“

Michael Murphey

Said the following about Adrian Pattison and Mark Neal:

“After Freightliner’s acquisition by Genesee & Wyoming, I spent time with the staff at the Birmingham Terminal and have followed their progress over the ensuing months.

Mr. Pattison assumed a lead role in encouraging his co-workers in the effort to achieve zero injuries, directing the regular safety meetings, preparation of safety briefings and instruction.

Along with Mark Neal, Mr. Pattison enthusiastically assumed these additional duties. They have facilitated the communication of safety concerns at their terminal. This has resulted in a dramatic decrease in injuries, as evidenced by having gone nearly 1000 days injury free.“
