“The charity was set up by our very own Operations Trainer - Steve Wardle. His son Alex tragically died a few years back with the condition Sudden Arrhythmia Death Syndrome. No one knew Alex had this condition so came as such a shock to his family.
Last year Steve and his charity champion Sheree Whetren as well as Georgia House (Charity Manager) have been trying to promote the need for Defibrillators to be easily accessed in the communities. They have worked with Managing Director Claire Mann to provide over 100 defibrillators to all staffed stations on the SWR network. This can be accessed by anyone and everyone.
They have also championed a train to be named after the foundation which happened a few months back. This was a phenomenon and was the talk of SWR.
Our employees are also behind this foundation and have raised over £10,000 for this charity including over 60 colleagues running in the Great South Run in a few weeks for the charity.
Sheree has provided confidence defibrillator and CPR drop-in sessions to over 800 colleagues giving them vital confidence to use the vital piece of life-saving equipment. This is now so popular that she’s booked well into the next year!
Steve and Sheree regularly attend events in the community at the weekends, raising awareness of SADS: and he’s now a local celebrity!!!
They have now raised over £14,000 and Steve has organised a huge event next January to test over 100 young employees and their families, over 2 days, in SWR to screen for SADS. This is not available on the NHS and is a huge opportunity for all of them to be screened themselves. This must have been a huge operation for Steve to get DRs and specialists and equipment and a place for all of this to fit into. …. But that’s what makes this team so special and unique.
They have taken part in World Heart Days, bucket collections - you name it they have done it.
Steve, Georgia and Sheree are the epitome of the word Charity and Team and as we say in SWR … #WeAreSWR“
